YANKEES 2
RED SOX 1
Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees held off a late charge from Boston, to defeat the Red Sox, 2-1. Mike Mussina shut out the Red Sox, but Mariano Rivera put a scare into Yankee fans, as he had to wiggle out of a bases loaded, with no outs jam, to hold on to victory.
Mike Mussina gave the Yankees six scoreless innings before leaving with light-headed symptoms. Mussina held the Red Sox to no runs on four hits over an 89-pitch performance, while striking out 5 batters. The victory was Mike Mussinas’ 11th on the season.
Jose Veras and Kyle Farnsworth each pitched a scoreless inning to deliver the ball to Rivera in the ninth inning. Mariano Rivera surrendered a leadoff single to J.D. Drew and hit Manny Ramirez with a pitch. Mike Lowell then followed up with a single to right-center field, driving in Boston’s first run of the afternoon. Rivera would then hit Kevin Youkilis with a pitch to load the bases, but Rivera would buckle down and escape the huge jam. Rivera struck out Coco Crisp swinging and induced Jason Varitek to pop out before fanning Julio Lugo to end the game.
Offensively, the Yankees scored in the second inning, when Jason gimabi scored from second on a Melky Cabrera single. The rally started with 2 outs, and help the Yanks take a 1-0 lead. Brett Gardner would add the second Yankee run on a sacrifice fly that would score the second run.
The Yankees needed this win in the worst way, and will now go for the split of the series on Sunday as they send Joba Chamberlain to face Tim Wakefield.
GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA: 6IP, 4H, 0ER, 5SO
CABRERA: 2-4, RBI
