YANKEES 2
RAYS 1

Wednesday night, the Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Mike Mussina. Mussina won his fifth consecutive start, and gave the Yankees a much needed performance.

Mike Mussina (4-3), held the Rays to one run over 6 1/3 innings. In Mussina’s 87-pitch performance, he let up only five hits, while walking one and striking out four, lowering his ERA to 3.99. Mussina handed the ball over to Ross Ohlendorf, who gave up Mussina’s 1 run, and then the combo of Joba chamberlain and Mariano Rivera closed the door on the Rays.

Offensively, Robinson Cano had a big 4-4 night. Cano, who started off the season on a horrible note, has heated up over the past few games. In the fourth, Hideki Matsui rapped a two-out double up the gap in left-center and scored on Cano’s single to center and in the fifth, Morgan Ensberg led off with a single, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on Abreu’s two-out double. This is all the scoring the Yankees would do…and all they would need.

Thursday afternoon, Ian Kennedy will once again try to work himself back into the starting rotation, as he will pitch the rubber game against the Rays.

GAME NOTES:
MUSSINA: 6.1IP, 5H, 1ER, 4SO
CANO: 4-4, RBI
ABREU: 1-4, RBI
