YANKEES 4
A’S 1
Thursday night in Oakland, the Yankees took the final game of the series, as they defeated the Athletics, 4-1. Andy Pettitte pitched a gem, and on Hideki Matsui’s birthday, Matsui delivered a Grand slam to give the Yankees the win.
Andy Pettitte limited Oakland to one run on five hits over eight innings to snap a two-start winless string. Pettitte looked dominating, and Oakland could not get thebats going. Andy looked as if he could go a complete game, but Mariano Rivera came into the 9th inning to pick up the save.
Offensively, it looked as if the Yankees weren’t going to help out Pettitte, until the 6th inning, when Hideki Matsui blasted a Grand Slam to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead which they never would give back. Matsui’s homerun was extra special becuse it was his 34th birthday, and what a way to spend it.
With the victory, the Yankees once again moved one game above the .500 mark at 34-33. Let’s hope that they don’t go right back to .500 after tomorrow. The season is moving along quickly…and it’s time to either make a run now, or pack it in!!
The Yankees will send Joba Chamberlain out on the mound to face ex-Yankee, Shaun Chacon and the Houston Astros in Interleague play on Friday.
GAME NOTES:
PETTITTE: 8IP, 5H, 1ER, 6SO
MATSUI: 1-4, GS HR, 4RBI
