YANKEES 3
RED SOX 4
Saturdays game at Fenway, came down to one bad decision….
the decision of Mike Mussina to pitch to Manny Ramirez, instead of walking him to the empty 1st base. Early in the game, Ramirez had already hit a homerun over the green monster off of Mussina, and this time, in the 6th inning, the Sox had runners on 2nd and 3rd base, with 2 outs, and Ramirez to the plate. Instea dof intentionally walking Ramirez, the Yanks once again make the mistake of pitching to him, and Manny ripped a double driving in the winning runs.
“He asked me who I felt better with, and I said, ‘I feel the same with both guys,’” Mussina said. “Youkilis puts up good at-bats against me, and if I walk Manny and load the bases, I put myself in a tight spot where I’ve got to throw strikes and I can’t be nibbling. The last thing he said before he left was that if I got behind him, I’d just walk him and move on. It was over before it started.” Mussina allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out one over 71 pitches (51 strikes).
The Yankees then had a chance to tie or take the lead in the 8th inning, after a lengthy rain delay. The Yanks had 2 runners on base, with 2 outs, and Alex Rodriguez went down swinging to Pappelbon.
The Yankees will try to win the rubber game of the series on Sunday, when Phil Hughes battles Dice-K.
