Yankees 4
Rays 13
Friday night at The Stadium, the Tampa Bay Rays clobbered the Yankees 13-4. Ian Kennedy made his first start of the season, and only his 4th start of his career, and got roughed up badly. Kennedy ran into a high pitch count early and was roughed up for six runs, including five in the third inning alone. The right-hander allowed four hits, walking four — a new career high — and striking out two.
The Yankees offense put up a fight in the 3rd inning, when they put up 4 runs, to cut the Rays lead to 6-4. Hideki Matsui knocked a solo homer, his first, off the right-field foul pole, and Derek Jeter drilled a ball off the center-field wall for a run-scoring triple. Jason Giambi added a run-scoring double to deep left-center in the frame.
Jonathan Albaladejo pitched well, keeping the Yanks in the game, throwing 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out four. The problem then came when LaTroy Hawking and Kyle Farnsworth entered. LaTroy Hawkins gave up six runs in the eighth, and Kyle Farnsworth served up an upper-deck homer to Pena….and the game got ugly, with the Rays leading 13-4.
Hopefully, we dont have to deal with Farnsworth all year long, like we did with Torre. Its time ot accept the fact that he is not good…… in fact, he is horrible. I’m tired of hearing “he’s got good stuff”. Its been enough years and chances to finally realize…. he cant pitch!!!
The Yanks will host the Rays in game 2 of the set, on Ssaturday afternoon when Andy Pettitte will make his first start.
GAME NOTES:
