Wednesday night in Toronto, the Yankees earned a much needed victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-1. Derek Jeter provided the offensive spark with a homerun, and was backed up by a great outing by Andy Pettitte.
Andy Pettitte pitched 7 strong innings, giving up only 1 run on 5 hits.
Pettitte walked no Blue Jay batters, and struck out four. Brian Bruney came in to pitch a scoreless final 2 innings, to preserve the win.
Offensively, the Yankees struck in the 1st inning. After the Yankees loaded the bases with 3 straight singles, Jason Giambi hit a sacrifice fly and Xavier Nady stroked a run-scoring single to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead.
In the 4th inning, the Yankees would add on another 3 runs, as Derek Jeter would connect on a 2 run homerun to right field. The shot moved the shortstop past Bill Dickey and into a tie with Roger Maris (203) for 11th place on New York’s all-time home runs list.
The Yankees will now face Roy Halliday, in an attempt to win the series.
GAME NOTES:
PETTITTE: 7IP, 5H, 1ER, 4SO
