YANKEES 2
BLUE JAYS 3
Thursday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees fell to the Blue Jays 3-2. Chien-Ming Wang pitched a great game, until the 7th inning when he gave up 3 runs, blowing a 2-0 lead.
Chien-Ming Wang cruised through the first six innings of play, trying to help the Yankees sweep the Jays. After six scoreless innings, things fell apart in the seventh. Wang was hit on the left ankle by a Frank Thomas comebacker, which Andy Phillips fielded and raced to the bag while Stairs scored Toronto’s first run. After a brief inspection on the mound, which included several warmup tosses, Wang then surrendered Aaron Hill’s run-scoring triple up the gap, tying the game. Catcher Gregg Zaun ripped a ground single past the dive of Robinson Cano in the decisive seventh, bringing home Hill and boosting the Jays to their first lead of the afternoon. Wang ended up throwing 89 pitches in a 7 1/3-inning performance, allowing seven hits while walking none and striking out three.
Offensively, the Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but then could ot touch the scoreboard again. Derek Jeter walked to open the first. Bobby Abreu followed by stroking a two-run double to the gap in left-center field, but McGowan settled in to shut down the threat and limit the Yankees to just four hits over seven innings.
The good news however, is that the Yankees did take 3-of-4 from the Blue Jays, which is another series win that they needed. The Yankees are now 6-2 since the All Star Break.
The Yanks will now start a 4 game set with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
