YANKEES 3
BLUEJAYS 2
Thursday Night at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2, and take the series 2 games to 1. Phil Hughes pitched a very good game, and combined with some offensive small ball, the Yankees won the game.
Phil Hughes retired the first nine batters before David Eckstein dropped a double down the left-field line leading off the fourth. After a groundout, Alex Rios hit a run-scoring single to left. Hughes would give up another run in the 5th inning, and that all the Jays would score. Hughes scattered four hits and threw 87 pitches over six innings, walking one and striking out four.
Left-hander Billy Traber made his Yankees debut by striking out the only batter he faced, Lyle Overbay, and Brian Bruney recorded the final two outs of the seventh. Joba Chamberlain fired his second scoreless inning of the season and, with the rally, picked up his third big league victory before Mariano Rivera closed out the ninth for his second save.
The Yankees put their rally together in the 8th inning with some small ball. After Melky Cabrera hit a single, DAmon laid down a bunt which Toronto pitcher Scott Downs bobbled the ball, and Damon reached safely. Derek Jeter sacrificed the runners along, then Abreu sent the go-ahead run home with his single.
The Yankees bullpen combo of Joba and MO is looking very good …and hopefully this will be the combo we see all season long.
