Wednesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees avoided a sweep at the hands of the Texas Rangers, with a 18-7 win. Sidney Ponson struggled, but the Yankee offense expolded in the 7th inning with 9 runs to take the lead and go on to win. The Bombers posted 16 hits, seven coming in the seventh inning alone, and the 18 runs scored were a season high.

Sidney Ponson gave up seven runs and nine hits to his former Rangers club through five-plus innings, and only struck out 1 while walking 3 batters. Ponson had a 6-3 lead, but gave up 2 homeruns in the 6th, to give the Rangers a 7-6 lead. Edwar Ramirez came in relief and quieted the Rangers bats for 2 innings, giving up 0 runs and striking out 3. Ramirez earned the win.

Offensively, the Yankees finally broke out of their slump. Jason Giambi led the charge for the Yankees, as he blasted a grand slam, doubled and racked up six RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance. Giambi’s grand slam came when the Yankes trailed 3-1, and he gave them a 5-3 lead.
Alex Rodriguez added his 535th career homer — a three-run shot — to pass Jimmie Foxx for sole possession of 14th place on Major League Baseball’s all-time list. Brett Gardner got in on the action when he singled to right field in the seventh for his first Major League hit and RBI. Gardner later scored on a Johnny Damon single to record his first big league run.

The Yankees will now start a 4 game weekend series on Thursday at the Stadium against the Rival Red Sox. Here is the probable pitching matchups:
