YANKEES 4
ATHLETICS 3
Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics in 12 innings, 4-3. Robinson Cano stayed hot at the plate, as he went 4-6, and scored twice. Jose Molina was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, to bring home the winning run for the Yankees.
Joba Chamberlain worked 6 innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking one and striking out eight while also hitting a batter. Joba once again received a no-decision even though he left the game with a 1-0 lead. Jose Veras gave up 1 run in the 7th inning, to allow Oakland to tie the game at 3-3. In the 9th inning, Mariano Rivera gave up a single to score the go ahead run for Oakland, 4-3. Yankee pitching on the day, struck out 18 Oakland batters. David Robertson, who hurled the 12th inning after Edwar Ramirez offered two scoreless innings, picked up the win for the Yanks.
In the 2nd inning, Robinson Cano singled to left and scored after Betemit’s double and Melky Cabrera’s single, and Brett Gardner drove in the second run with a double off the pitcher’s glove that bounced into left field to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead. The Yankees would then strand runners on base every inning after, until the 9th inning, when trailing 3-2. Robinson Cano reached Huston Street for a two-out double to the gap in left-center field — and then Wilson Betemit followed with a run-scoring single to even the score. In the 12th inning, with the bases loaded, Jose Molina was hit in the back knee, to give the Yankees a walk-off Hit By Pitch.
The Yankees will go for the sweep of the series on Sunday afternoon, when they send Andy Pettitte to the mound to face Oaklands All-Star pitcher, Justin Duchscherer.
