The Yankees have until Monday night (tonight) to finalize which players will be offered arbitration, a series of decisions that could impact the futures of Andy Pettitte and Bobby Abreu. By offering six-year free agents arbitration by midnight ET, clubs can guarantee two Draft picks for any Type A free agent it loses, and one draft pick (sandwich pick) for a Type B free agent. The club will not receive compensation for any free agent it loses if it does not offer arbitration.

The Yankees are expected to offer arbitration to Andy Pettitte, Bobby Abreu, Jason giambi, Carl Pavano, and Ivan Rodriguez, and the the players have until Dec. 7 to accept or reject.

It is fairly certain that Pavano, Giambi, and Pudge will NOT be in the plans for the Yankees next season. Bobby Abreu is most likely to also sign elsewhere, although he had mentioned that he wanted to stay in pinstripes.
However, the Yankees have mentioned that Xavier Nady will be the starting right fielder next season for the Yankees.

The biggest question mark is Andy Pettitte. Pettitte has stated numerous times that he want to pitch in New York next season, but the Yankees have not made any offers or attempts to keep him in town. If the Yankees offer Pettitte arbitration and he accepts, he would become a signed player under control for the ‘09 season, and his salary — $16 million in each of the past two seasons — would be determined by the arbitration process.

Let’s hope that Andy Pettitte is still here.
