YANKEES 8
MARINERS 1

Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, history was almost made, as Chien Ming Wang pitched 7 1/3 innings of perfect ball, leading the Yankees to an 8-1 win.

Wang (1-2) instead settled for eight innings of one-run, two-hit ball in his first victory of the season, an 8-1 win over the Mariners. Wang, who walked none and struck out four, was untouchable all afternoon long. Wang kept the Mariners off the bases, until 1 out in the 8th inning, when Ben Broussard hit a homerun to right, ending the Perfect game bid.

Offensively, the Yankees pounced on Jeff Weaver in the 6th inning, when they batted around and scored 5 runs, to take a 6-0 lead. During the inning, Jeff Weaver walked and hit Yankee batters to load the bases…and then Derek Jeter’s two-run double to left field, knocked Weaver out of the game. One day after having his 20 game hitting streak snapped, Jeter had a 3-4 game, with 2 RBI.

The Yankees return to action tomorrow at the stadium, when Darrell Rasner (0-1)faces Jarrod Washburn (2-2).

GAME NOTES:

WANG: Aside from pitching 7 1/3 innings of Perfect baseball, even more importantly, Wang gave the Yankees 8 innings on the mound. (8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 K).
