YANKEES 2
RAYS 1
Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium was Mustache day, in which Yankee Stadium handed out fake mustaches to the crowd in honor of Jason Giambi. Giambi responded with an RBI, and it was Abreu who would come up big. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Bobby Abreu drilled a game winning double, to drive home Derek Jeter form 1st base, to give the Yankees a 2-1 victory, and a series sweep.
Sidney Ponson pitched very good for the Yankees, as he shut down Tampa Bay through five innings before he gave up a solo home run to Carlos Pena in the sixth. Ponson would go 6 innings, giving up just 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 4. After Ponson, the bullpen did a shutdown job of it’s own. Jose Veras and Kyle Farnsworth quickly retired three batters each, before Mariano Rivera (4-3) took over with two scoreless innings to pick up his second straight win.
Offensively, the Yankees jumped out in front in the 1st inning, as Jason Giambi hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. The game would be deadlocked at 1-1, until the 10th inning. Derek Jeter worked a walk, and up stepped Bobby Abreu, who battled and fouled off 4 fastballs, before connecting on a shot to right-center, which would drive in Derek Jeter for the game winning run. The Walk Off RBI was the first in a Yankees uniform for Bobby Abreu.
With the sweep of the Rays, and 4 straight wins, the Yankees find themselves 6.5 games out of first place. The Yankees will take a quick flight to Pittsburgh to make up an earlier rainout, before heading to Toronto.
