The Yankees signed their final arbitration-eligible player, Brian Bruney, to a one-year deal for a reported $1.25 million. The number falls in between the $1.55 million that Bruney requested and the $1.1 million that the Yankees offered.

Brian Bruney was injured most of last season, but when he saw late season action, he had pretty good numbers out of the bullpen. Bruney finished 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings.

    torre.jpg

Many Yankee fans over the last 12 years, see Joe Torre as the lovable old man, who cares so much about his players, and can do no wrong. People seem to forget that a guy making millions per year to do practically nothing, will always have an ego, no matter how much he attempts to hide it…and we should never feel bad for a guy making that kind of money.

Less than 2 years after leaving the Yankees, Joe Torre has released a new book called “The Yankee Years”, in which he airs alot of dirty laundry towards his ex-team. From calling, and claiming teammates called Alex Rodriguez “A-Fraud”, to A-Rod having an obsession with Derek Jeter, to claiming that Brian Cashman forced him out of the Yankees organization… Joe Torre said alot of controversial items.

The part in which Torre went wrong in doing such a book, is when it comes to his “legacy”. When Joe Torre left the Yankees, it was made out to seem that the Yankees were the “bad guys”, and that “poor Joe” was thrown out the door. Yankee fans went as far as to cheer for the Dodgers last year in the playoffs, to see Joe Torre succeed.

Now… Joe Torre has ruined his public image, and will quickly see a turn of the Yankees fans. Joe Torre does not need more money, and is it worth the backlash for the small amount of money he would be paid for a book??

What it comes down to..is the “spotlight”. Some guys just can’t help but keep themselves in the spotlight. From 2004 playoff collapse, to his final year as the Yankee skipper… he was horrible. It seems very obvious that once Don Zimmer left his side as bench coach…Joe was clueless.
Despite being a horrible manager in that time, Torre’s character was so lovable to the Yankee fans, that they would make excuses and look past all that.

Now that Torre has made comments , a year after leaving the team, it makde him look petty. If all this was “drama” was going on in the clubhouse while he was manager..doe she not realize that it reflects badly on HIM?? It’s the managers job to stop problems in the clubhouse… not to let it happen and then talk about it 2 years later.

In conclusion, Joe Torre made a major mistake with this book. He could have gone down as one of the Yankees favorite managers, and been applauded anytime he came back to the stadium…. but instead, he now looks like a bitter old man, who is greedy for money and the spotlight!!

I knew it would happen sooner or later, even when it wasn’t looking probable. The Yankees finally signed Andy Pettitte to a 1 year, $5.5 million contract, which is laced with incentives that could push the final number to $12 million.

“There was no other team ever brought into the equation,” Pettitte said. “My mind never changed. I wanted to come back to the Yankees, and in my mind, I was going to be back.”

“Andy said every step of the way that he wanted to be a Yankee,” Cashman said. “I remember him telling me at one point in this process, ‘Cash, if you guys want me back, we will find a way to get this thing done.’ He honored that.”

“I guess it does take a shot at your pride a little bit,” Pettitte said. “But when you put all that aside, I wanted to play for the New York Yankees. That was the bottom line. I wanted to be there and play in that new stadium.”

The Yankees will now go into the 2009 season with arguably the best starting pitching staff in baseball. Pettitte will most likely be the #4 starter when the rotation is announced. Most say that Burnett will be a #2 man, with Wang the #3…. but I think that Wang is a much better pitcher than Burnett and should ultimately be the #2.

With the addition of Andy Pettitte, it now leaves questions as ot where Phil Hughes will wind up in all this. Most likely he will start the season in the minors, because I can’t see them using him as a bullpen option. If it were me, I would have Hughes #5, and send Joba back to the bullpen.

    My Projected Rotation
    1- Sabathia
    2- Wang
    3- Burnett
    4- Pettite
    5- Chamberlain

The Yankees avoided arbitration with both outfielders Xavier Nady and Melky Cabrera. Nady agreed to a one-year, $6.55 million deal, while Cabrera signed a one-year deal worth $1.4 million.

Just because these two players were signed does not necessarily mean that they will be on the team come opening day. It had been rumored that Xavier Nady may be a part of a trade along with Nick Swisher.

The moves leave one other Yankee eligible for arbitration: Brian Bruney. The right-handed reliever earned $725,000 last year and has asked for $1.55 million, while the Yankees countered with $1.1 million.

Bruney was 3-0 with one save and a 1.83 ERA in 32 appearances last season, walking 16 and striking out 33 in 34 1/3 innings. The Yankees expect to make Bruney part of the relief pitching, as he may find himself as the bridge to Mariano River, since Joba will be in the starting rotation.

The Yankees’ Brian Bruney, Melky Cabrera and Xavier Nady joined a group of 111 Major League players who filed for salary arbitration on Thursday.
Salary arbitration figures are scheduled to be exchanged on Jan. 20, with hearings taking place from Feb. 1 through Feb. 21.

Xavier Nady, along with Nick Swisher have been the talk of trade rumors around MLB lately. The Yankees have a crowded outfield, and it seems less than likely that Nady, Siwsher, and Cabrera will all be on the opening day roster, beacuse the Yankees have plans for Brett Gardner to play some CF, along with Johhny Damon, and they still have Hideki Matsui in the outfield mix.

I would look to see Nady stay put, unless he is needed to complete a deal along with Swisher for another outfielder, such as Mike Cameron. The opening day lineup right now in the outfield, looks a sif it would be:
    CF Damon
    LF Matsui
    RF Nady

Jorge Posada has hopes of playing for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, but the Yankees would prefer to have the catcher physically prepared for Opening Day.

The 37-year-old Posada is currently on a throwing program in Tampa, Fla., rehabilitating the right shoulder strain that cost him most of last season. Posada underwent surgery July 30 and the Yankees are counting on him as their starting backstop next season.

“I am sure he would love to play [in the World Baseball Classic], but he is currently rehabbing from surgery and would not be ready,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.

“This will be my last chance to play for Puerto Rico, and I’m very clear on that,” Posada said. “For that reason, I’ll do anything possible to be 100 percent, because it is a dream of mine to wear that uniform.”

The Yankees can’t afford another season of injury for Jorge Posada, so hopefully Posadsa will sit out the World Baseball Classic. The only Yankees currently slated to play in the Classic are Derek Jeter, who will represent the United States, and the trader, Alex Rodriguez, who will switch teams and play for the Dominican Republic.

The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame has inducted Ricky Henderson to join the roster.
Henderson spent 5 years with the Yankees, and in that short time, he holds the Yankees record for stolen bases, with 326.

“There was only one Rickey Henderson in baseball,” Yankees chairperson George M. Steinbrenner said in a statement. “He was the greatest leadoff hitter of all time. I consider him a great friend with tremendous spirit and a true Yankee.”

The Yankees acquired Henderson before the 1985 season in a swap with the Oakland A’s, dealing Stan Javier, Jay Howell, Jose Rijo, Eric Plunk and Tim Birtsas out west. Henderson found a home atop a lineup that showcased Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield among its key contributors, batting .314 with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs.

Henderson is recognized as the one of the greatest lead-off hitters of all time, and he also owns the record for most stolen bases all time. He still holds the top three single-season steals totals in Yankees history, with 93 in 1988, 87 in ‘86 and 80 in ‘85.

The Yankeee have signd Angel Berroa, the 2003 American League Rookie of the Year, to a minor league contract. The 30-year-old shortstop has agreed to a Minor League contract with New York. According to The Associated Press, Berroa is guaranteed $66,000 under his deal.

Berroa will be invited to Yankee Spring Training, as he will try to earn a spot on the team as a utility player. His main competition will be Cody Ransom.

Angel Berroa was a Rookie if the Year with Kansas City Royals back in 2003, but has steadily declined in production each year, and most recently became a bench player with the Dodgers. Berroa hit .230 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 84 games for the Dodgers in 2008.

Rumors out of the Bronx are that the Yankees may be shopping Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady. With the acquisition of Mark Texiera to fill the firstbaseman role, Nick Swisher is now crowding the outfield roster positions.

Nady is one of three remaining Yankees eligible for salary arbitration –reliever Brian Bruney and outfielder Melky Cabrera are the others — and will be due a raise over the $3.35 million he earned last season.

With Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, and a battle between Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner for CF, the Yankees are stacked when adding Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady to the pot.

If I were the Yankees, I would not trade Xavier Nady.. I would trade Nick Siwsher. I never understood the point of bringing Nick Siwsher here in the first place.

However, the BEST solution possible… would have been to resign Bobby Abreu, and then you wouldn’t have this mess.

Well, unfortunately Andy Pettitte has turned down the Yankees offer of 1-year, $10million. Brian Cashman has had discussions recently about Andy Pettitte but after Pettitte rejected the Yankees $10 Million offer, the Yankees also counter rejected what Pettitte’s agent asked for.

“There’s still dialogue going on,” Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner said. “They were not happy with our offer; we were not happy with what they wanted. There’s been no agreement.”

“Anything is possible, all options,” Steinbrenner said. “We’re just going to continue to look at things. We’ll see where we end up in March.”

“I know what he thinks about us,” Cashman said. “It doesn’t mean it’s going to necessarily translate into something that works for everybody or not. I think the fact that you stay above board and keep dialogue lines open, that’s a healthy thing. At the same time, I can’t tell you that I’m optimistic about it, either.”

From what I hear from sources is, that Cashman wants Andy Pettitte, but others are not as eager to bring him back. I have a feeling that if it was up to Cashman, he would give Pettitte what he wants…but unfortunately, the new “owners” of the team are not as willing. Times like these may be where we miss George!!
