Once again the Yankees are toying around with the wrong people, and it will bite them ONCE AGAIN in the a$$. There have been reports that the Yankees want free agent lefthander Andy Pettitte back in pinstripes — but at a reduced price. Now they could have some competition.
FOX Sports reports Pettitte has spoken multiple times with former Yankees manager Joe Torre about the possibility of pitching for the Dodgers. The Yankees do not learn their lesson, that when they arenot loyal to their players, it will burn them.
I understand wanting to go after CC and AJ … however, going after Derek Lowe is just rediculous. Who in their right mind would choose to have Lowe in their rotation over Andy Pettitte?
The Yanks need to stop fantasizing over these “over-hyped” pitchers, and take care of businees, before they make the same mistake with Pettitte for the second time now.

Earlier this week, Mike Mussina retired from Major League Baseball. The final pitch of Mike Mussina’s career was an 88-mph fastball on the outside corner to Dustin Pedroia, which he rolled into a double play, ending the sixth inning and ending a great season and career for Mike Mussina.
Mussina left his final season as a 20 game winner, and proved alot of skeptics wrong. Now, the question is: “s he a Hall Of Famer?”
“I think that’s an argument that people are going to have opinions on both sides,” Mussina said. “There’s some nice things that I’ve been able to do. There’s both sides to the argument. My numbers match up well with guys that are in the Hall of Fame, and of course there are guys that have better numbers than mine.
“I think I’ve done as much as I’m capable of doing at the level I want to do it at. If it creates a good argument, then that’s all the better.”
“There’s no question in my mind he’s a Hall of Famer,” Cashman said. “What he’s done in the period of the steroid era, unfortunately, in the American League East — I don’t care what that record is. Some people say 300 wins is an automatic plateau.
“What he did to get 270 total wins, with all those things combined — in a division where the Red Sox and Yankees have been slugging it out … [in] the toughest division in baseball for at least a decade — I just think it has been spectacular for the length and consistency. He’s one of the all-timers.”
In my opinion, Mike Mussina is definetly a Hall Of Famer. Mussina won 270 games out of his 536 starts, and his career ERA of 3.68 is respectable, but even more impressive when compared to the league-average ERA of 4.51 during that time. Mussina’s 2,813 strikeouts — are 19th all-time, while his 785 walks, 71 wild pitches and 60 hit batters over 3,562 2/3 innings indicate excellent control.
When comparing Moose’s numbers to other Hall Of Famers, and considering he pitched in the AL East, against a steroid era of baseball hitters…. he is deserving of a HOF spot.
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSEE!!!

Rumor has it that the Yankees offered a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $80 million, to A.J. Burnett, who became a free agent when he opted out of his contract with the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Burnett will turn 32 in January, having gone 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA for the Blue Jays this past season. He led the American League with 34 starts and 231 strikeouts, fanning 9.39 batters per nine innings.
I think that the Burnett would be a decent pickup for the Yankees, however, I think he is a bit overrated. A 4.07 ERA isn’t Cy Young stuff, that everyone makes him out to be. People in NY think he is so great, because he always pitches great against the Yankees. Now that he won’t get those 5-6 starts per year against the Yankees…that ERA may go up a bit.
Either way, it’s a good offer, coming days after the CC Sabathia offer, which shows the Yankees are being very aggressive looking to solidify their pitching rotation. The Yankees also are rumored to be interested in maybe making a trade for Jake Peavy.
STAY TUNED..the fun is just beginning!!

The Yankees made a record-breaking six-year, $140 million offer to free-agent starter CC Sabathia on Friday as the first part of their plan to overhaul their starting rotation, Hank Steinbrenner, one of the team’s co-chairmen, confirmed. The offer is the largest potential contract in history for a pitcher, topping the six-year, $137.5 million deal signed earlier this year by Johan Santana after he was obtained by the Mets in a trade with the Twins.
One season after winning the American League Cy Young Award in Cleveland, Sabathia produced a 17-10 record in 35 starts split between the Indians and Brewers. After joining the Brewers in a midseason trade, Sabathia finished 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA, striking out more than five times as many batters as he walked and throwing seven complete games, three of them shutouts.
The Yankees also have not ruled out adding more pitchers. The Yankees plan on still making offers for AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe. Hopefully they will not get Lowe, but Burnett wouldn’t be a bad pick up.

The Yankees have traded utility infielder Wilson Betemit and Minor League pitchers Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez to the Chicago White Sox, in return for Nick Swisher, and reliever Kanekoa Texeira.
Now, when we heard that the Yankees were going after, Mark Texiera…we weren’t counting on this Texiera. Nick Swisher is an average player, who the Yankees envision playing First Base this season. Swisher only hit .219 overall last season and .197 from the left side… so my question is.. WHAT are the Yankees thinking??
Time will tell if Mark Texiera is still in the plans for 1st Base, but why would the Yankees trade their “top pitching prospect” away, for an average first baseman?
SIDENOTE: When asked about Swisher possibly playing Center Field, Cashman said that wasnt in the plans..and the only outfield plans thus far, are Damon in Left and Nady in right…… begging me to ask.. WHY would you not sign ABREU…who is wayyyy better than Xavier Nady?

Wednesday afternoon, the Yankees re-signed reliever Damaso Marte to a three-year contract, keeping him in pinstripes through at least 2011. The deal includes a club option for the 2012 season. The team did not disclose financial details, though the Spanish-language publication Impacto Deportivo reported earlier in the day that the contract was worth $12 million over the first three years.
Marte, 33, finished 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 25 appearances after joining the Yankees in a midseason trade with the Pirates, who also sent outfielder Xavier Nady to the Bronx for four players. With Pittsburgh, Marte was 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA and five saves. He owns a 3.29 ERA and 36 saves over nine big league seasons.
When the Yankees declined his option a few days ago, it was pretty obvious that they figured they can work out a longer deal, for less money per year, and thats what they did. Expect this weekend to be a busy weekend for the Yankees, as the Free Agent signings will start to take off.

Though Andy Pettitte indicated on Friday that he has “made it perfectly clear” where he wants to play next year, the Yankees have still not contacted either Pettitte or his agent. Thus, Pettitte had no choice but to file for Free Agency.
A report released Thursday in Newsday stated that the Yankees would only consider bringing back Pettitte if he agreed to a one-year deal worth less than the $16 million the team paid him last season.
“You look at the ballpark over there, and I would love to do it,” Pettitte acknowledged at season’s end. “I’ve got some things that I need to weigh over and figure out. Hopefully, I can come to a conclusion pretty quick and figure out what I want to do.”
The Yankees have through Thursday to exclusively negotiate with Pettitte, before the league’s free agency filing period ends and all other clubs can discuss financial details with him.
This could be a disasterous move by the Yankees. The Yankees are barking up the same tree that they did a few years ago with Pettitte, in which they are playing around. Pettitte did the Yankees a favor by agreeing to a one year deal last season for $16 million, so he wouldn’t put the Yanks in a financial bind… YET.. the Yankees turn around and ask him to take a paycut this season??
The Yankees are wrong in this situation..and it better not come back to bite them in the ass…. like these things usually do. Stop playing around..and pay Pettitte his $16 million.

The Yankees have declined their 2009 options on first baseman Jason Giambi and right-hander Carl Pavano, officially making both players free agents.
This was no surprise that this was going to happen. The only suprise is that it took them this long to cut Pavano. Carl Pavano may go down as one of the biggest Yankee Free Agent busts in the history of the franchise. Pavano was injured all the time, and in 4 years with the Yankees, he only appeared in 26 games and had a 9-8 record with a 5.00 era.
On the other hand, It is kind of sad to see Giambi leave, as he was a very likeable player, and been on the team since 2002. Although he never reached the numbers which he put together for Oakland, he still had quite a few big homers for the Yanks. The 37-year-old Giambi completed his seventh season in New York, batting .247 with 19 doubles, 32 home runs and 96 RBIs in 145 games.
“His option year was so big, number wise,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in Dana Point, Calif., where the annual GM meetings concluded their first official day of business. “We certainly love Jason, he’s been you know a pleasure to have as a Yankee.
“And it doesn’t mean we won’t the opportunity going forward to have him be a Yankee, but the option number was such a large number that this was a no-brainer because of that. He’s in the free-agent market and obviously we have an opportunity to still pursue him. Now 29 other clubs will have the opportunity to pursue him. The option number being as large as it was kind of forced our hand to make this move. It wasn’t a hard decision.”

With the Free Agent buzz in the air, the Yankees are looking to go shopping. Of course, every team is looking at CC Sabathia, as pitching is the number one order of shopping for every team. However, the Yankees are considering Manny Ramirez.
“There’s nothing we are not looking at,” Steinbrenner told The Associated Press on Friday at the Yankees’ Spring Training complex. “And personally, I like Manny. He’s one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game. He’s a free spirit for sure, but he knows how to win. We like some of the other guys, too. We just don’t know yet.”
The Yankees better NOT get this guy. The Yankees don’t need a guy like this to add to the mix…. We don’t need another non-hustling, pre-madonna, who can’t even run to first base. We also don’t need a guy who will quit on plays when he isn’t happy, or doesn’t feel like running.
I understand that Manny is one of the greatest hitters in recent baseball history…however, his baggage is NOT worth it. The Yanks have enough “star” problems on the team as it is…and Manny would disrupt tings even more. Also…as a Yankee fan, if you want Manny here, you are not a real Yankee fan. Let him go play in L.A. … because if he becomes a Yankee, I have had it..and will boo him every step he takes on the field.

Bobby Abreu, who has driven in 100 or more runs in each of the last six seasons, was one of four New York Yankees players to file for free agency on Thursday. Joining Abreu on the first day of the filing period were Yankees catchers Ivan Rodriguez and Chad Moeller, plus right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson.
Abreu, who turns 35 in February, batted .296 with 20 home runs, 100 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 156 games. The other 3 Yankees are of no significance, as they really have no need for any of them.
Personally, I do not understand why Yankees fans are so quick to want to replace Bobby Abreu. Abrue has put up solid numbers as a Yankee, and has also hit in the clutch (which most Yankees fail to do).
Yes, Abreu is not the greatest outfielder, and we know he is afraid of the outfield walls….. HOWEVER… Who do you want to replace him with??
If you look at th epossible options out there to play right field, you will not find a better player than Bobby Abreu. Yankee fans and the organization need to stop pointing fingers and being spoiled, and quick to ship guys out….when they aren’t part of the problem.
On a side note…if the Yankees get Manny …. I will be bashing him and the Yankees organization on here every single day!!!
