Wednesday night in Philadelphia, the Phillies ended the cities title drought, by winning the World Series. The Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3, in the conclusion of Game 5, to win the series 4 games to 1.

In the seventh, Pat Burrell picked the ideal time for his first World Series hit, pounding a double off the wall in left-center field. Pinch-runner Eric Bruntlett went to third on a groundout and scored on Pedro Feliz’s tiebreaking single.

Also key in the game, was in the 7th inning, when Chase Utley threw a ball home to cut off a potential run at the plate. With Bartlett racing around third on an up-the-middle roller, Utley faked a throw the first — knowing he no shot of getting Iwamura — then threw home to get Bartlett at the plate.

Of course we congratulate the Philadelphia Phillies on the World Series win…but at the same time, we gotta give it up for the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays had an amazing run this season, after 10 straight horrible seasons. The Rays won the best division in baseball, and captured their first AL East Division title. After winning the East, the Rays then went on to win 2 playoff series, and advancing to the franchises first ever World Series.

In the Series, the Rays bats calmed down, the umps calls were not on their side either…and things came undone. With the young talent on the Rays, the Yankees will have another team to reckon with in the East for many years to come!!

Monday night in Philadelphia, Major League Baseball escaped what could have been disasterous. In Game 5 of the World Series, in what could be the deciding game, the game was delayed by Rain.

With 2 outs in the Top of the 6th, and the Phillies leading the Rays 2-1, the rain was pouring down in Philly, and the bases were like puddles. The situation presented itself, whereas if the game was delayed at that moment…it could have led to the calling of a game which was official, and the World Series would have ended with the Phillies winning a shortened game. This outcome would have been disasterous for the MLB, having a series end early. Also…it wouldnt have been much fun for Philly fans if they had to wait 2 hours to hear that the game is called and they won the Series with a delayed celebration.

However, the Rays saved MLB and themselves for another day. BJ Upton stole second base, setting up Carlos Pena to come up HUGE with a base hit to score Upton and tie the game at 2-2. Once the game was tied and the Top of the 6th came to an end, the umpires called for a delay, which later was turned to a postponement.

With the game tied 2-2, the game has been suspended until Tuesday, where they will pick up in the bottom of the 6th inning, and the World Series can continue correctly.

Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were named to The Sporting News American League All-Star team on Friday. Rosters for the Sporting News All-Star teams were selected by a panel of 41 general managers and assistant general managers from both leagues.

Jeter was an AL All-Star for the ninth time, coming during a season when the shortstop and Yankees captain batted .300 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs in 150 games for New York. His campaign was highlighted by a late-season surge that allowed him to surpass Lou Gehrig to become the all-time hits leader at Yankee Stadium, logging his 1,271st hit on Sept. 16.

Rodriguez, the Yankees’ third baseman and the reigning AL MVP, was selected to his 12th AL All-Star team in 2008, batting .302 with 35 home runs and 103 RBIs in 138 games.

Also representing the American League were second baseman Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox; outfielders Carlos Quentin of the White Sox, Josh Hamilton of the Rangers; designated hitter Aubrey Huff of the Orioles and reliever Francisco Rodriguez of the Angels.

The Cubs and Yankees are talking about playing an exhibition game or games at the new Yankee Stadium the weekend before most teams open the regular season, on Monday, April 6.

The game, if played, would be the first action on the new field.
The official opener of the $1.6 billion ballpark is April 16 against Cleveland.

Joba Chamberlain was arrested over the weekend for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

Chamberlain apologized for “an error in judgment” on Sunday, one day after he was arrested by the Nebraska State Patrol near his hometown of Lincoln.

“I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation,” Chamberlain said in a statement released by his agent, Randy Hendricks. “I intend to properly resolve this situation and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season.”

Chamberlain is to appear in court on Dec. 17. His blood-alcohol-content level was cited to be 0.134 at the time of his arrest. The legal limit in Nebraska is 0.08.

After the Yankee Organizational meeting in Tampa this past week, the Yankees made a list of their priorites, and made a few decisions. First off, Joba Chamberlain will be in the starting rotation.

After Joba’s injury last season, rumors were that he may be back in the bullpen, but it now seems as if the plans are to have Chamberlain in the starting rotation. Starting pitching is on the top of the priorities list this off season, and with Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain in the rotation, Phil Hughes expecting to start and the most likely return of Andy Pettitte…. it seems as if the Yankees have their eyes set on a few free agents. Heading the list of Free Agents are: C.C. Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Ben Sheets. It was rumored that they may be interested in a tade for Jake Peavy, but his no trade clause is a problem, as he has stated that he does not want to pitch in the American League.

Also on the list of priorities, is picking up a 1st base replacement for Jason Giambi. Number one on the list is Mark Teixiera.

Personally, I still think Joba Chamberlain is more valuable in the bullpen, and if they pick up a free agent like Sabathia, I wouldn’t be surprised if Joba finds his way back to the bullpen. Moving Joba to the starting rotation will also most likely spell the end of Mike Mussina’s career in pinstripes, as there will be no room in the starting rotation.

The Yankees will not renew the contract of third-base coach Bobby Meacham, the club announced on Tuesday. Meacham was one of two original selections that manager Joe Girardi made for his coaching staff upon being named the Yankees’ manager last November. Meacham replaced Larry Bowa, who followed former manager Joe Torre to the Dodgers.

A possibility of replacing Meacham at 3rd base coach, may be Willie Randolph. Randolph once held the position, and has received great response by the Yankees organization and Yankee fans, since being released by the Mets.

In addition, special pitching instructor Rich Monteleone was dismissed by the club. A former first-round pick of the Tigers who pitched 10 seasons in the big leagues with the Mariners, Angels, Yankees and Giants, Monteleone had been a Yankees instructor for the past four seasons after serving as a bullpen coach from 2002-04.

Bench coach Rob Thomson, first-base coach Tony Pena and pitching coach Dave Eiland are all expected to return.

Even though the season just ended for the Yankees, and the MLB Playoffs are still going on, the Yankees are ready for off season planning.
The Yankees have scheduled their pro scouting meetings to begin Sunday and run into early next week. The club expects to hold its annual organizational summit in Tampa closer to the end of October, when other avenues — including free agency — will be discussed in more detail.

Aside from targeting some Free Agents, the Yanks will also have to address coaching situations. Hitting coach Kevin Long is the only coach who is currently contracted, as he signed a three-year agreement worth approximately $1 million before the campaign, and he has already planned offseason trips to work with both Alex Rodriguez in Miami and Robinson Cano in the Dominican Republic.

After coming off a 3rd place finish, don’t be surprised to see some major changes in both coaches and player personell. Also… there are some coaches (including some ex-yank) that could come hlep the situation. Don’t be surprised of Wille Randolph finds his way back to the Bronx.

As far as players go…it’s no surprise that the main “attractive targets” will include: Texiera, C.C. Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and possible Jake Peavy to name a few.

The Yankees have canceled plans for a sendoff ceremony to be held in November at Yankee Stadium, moving the 85-year-old ballpark nearer to closing its doors forever.

The final game at Yankee Stadium was held on Sept. 21, with the Yankees defeating the Baltimore Orioles, 7-3. The team had discussed organizing an event on the weekend of Nov. 8-9 that would have included remembrances of many of the non-baseball events at Yankee Stadium.

“The Yankees were considering having a charitable event at Yankee Stadium for BAT (Baseball Assistance Team),” the club said in a statement. “However, the Yankees realized that the final event at Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game which in fact took place on Sept. 21, 2008 with the magnificent closing ceremony. Accordingly, rather than having a fundraiser, the Yankees will be donating $500,000 to BAT.”

Opening Day at the new Yankee Stadium, a $1.3 billion facility rising across 161st Street, is scheduled for April 16 against the Cleveland Indians.

I’m actually glad that the Yankees are not having an additional “send off” to the Stadium. I had the priveledge of attending the final game at the Stadium on Sept. 21, and it could not have been a better way to put the Stadium to rest and take in all the memories one last time.

Mariano Rivera had surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday, and is expected to resume throwing in three months, which will permit him to be ready for Spring Training.

Tests revealed inflammation and calcification on top of the AC joint in the 38-year-old reliever’s right shoulder. The procedure is considered relatively minor. Rivera is expected to assume his usual light Spring Training workload — skipping all road Grapefruit League games.

Luckily, this is not considered serious…and MO will hopefully be the same old MO come 2009!!
