Brian Cashman finalized a contract extension on Tuesday to remain as the general manager of the Yankees, an agreement that will run through the 2011 season.
It was uncertain as to the future of Brian Cashman after this season of the Yankees not making the playoffs. Many people criticezed Cashman for not pulling the trigger on the deal that would have brought Johan Santana to the Yankees this season.
“Brian has shown throughout his Yankees career that he has the dedication, integrity and know-how needed to perform — and succeed — in this environment. Having him in place allows us to begin an offseason of hard work, and we are pleased he will be working hand in hand with us to bring the New York Yankees back to the postseason.” said the Steinbrenners.
As much as people complained about the Yankees having such a “horrible season” this year…people dont realize that 89 wins is not “horrible”. The Yankees had a good enough record to win the AL Central, or the NL Wild Card, or the NL West for that matter…. and the Yankees lost their ACe Chien Ming Wang, and one of their major contributors in Jorge Posada for most of the season.
Even though everyone is panicking, and calling for major moves… I think the Yankees are just one makor pitcher away from returning to the Series.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has opted to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his sore right shoulder. The club has not officially released a date for the procedure, but Rivera is expected to be ready for Spring Training.
Rivera assembled one of his best statistical seasons, converting 39 of 40 save opportunities to go 6-5 with a team-leading 1.40 ERA, pitching in 64 games overall.
Mo toughed it out for us in a bit of pain this season, and came through as dominant as usual. Girardi says that there is no need to worry…it is a minor procedure, and he will be ready for Spring Training in 2009.

Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 6-2. Mike Mussina picked up the win for the Yankees, and it was his 20th victory of the season. Xavier Nady provided the offense for Mussina, and allowed him to reach the 20 win milestone for the first time in his long career.
Mike Mussina pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball to earn win number 20 of the season, and number 270 of his career. Mussina, who finished the year 20-9, walked two and struck out three before relying on the bullpen for nine outs. Boston scored twice in the eighth inning off Joba Chamberlain, Brian Bruney and Damaso Marte, but Rivera recorded the final four outs for his 39th save.
Offensively, Xavier Nady provided a 3 run homerun in the fourth with his 25th home run of the season. Mussina made the 3-0 lead stick, and the bullpen gave up 2 runs.
“This is one of those things that’s going to take a little while to sink in,” Mussina said. “I’ve been playing baseball a long time, and I’ve accomplished some things. I’ve been on championship teams, had some really good years, and this is the last day of the season of a split doubleheader in Boston in the rain … It’s just kind of perfect. The story just fit together nicely.”
“It’s my last game in my last year [under contract], and I don’t know what the future holds,” he said. “It could be my last year, it may not be my last year. When you get to your 18th season, it could always be your last season.”
Going into this season, all of us figured on Wang, Pettitte, and Hughes to carry the load for the Yankees….and we thought that Mussina may try to stay in the rotation in the #5 spot, and maybe even lose it at some point. Instead, Mike Mussina ended up being the ACE of the staff this season, and would get my vote as the team MVP!! This may be the last time we see Mike Mussina in the Majors, or as a Yankee…. and he has been here for years. Thanks MIKE!!
