No..this is not a joke….
I am NOT making this up…
Yet ANOTHER Yankee will join the DL…

PHIL HUGHES!!

Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique. Hughes, 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this month. Phil Hughes joins Jorge Posada, and Alex rodriguez as the most notable Yankees on the DL at the moment.

The Yankees could have an option at Triple-A in 27-year-old right-hander Darrell Rasner, who is 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA.

    YANKEES 2
    TIGERS 6

Wednesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees dropped another game to the Detroit Tigers, 6-2. Andy Pettitte was cruising along until the 5th inning, when Marcus Thames hit a 2 run homer, and then in the 6th inning, Polanco added another homerun.

Andy Pettitte (3-3) worked six innings, scattering seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Pettitte gave up 5 earned runs, which was unusual because he usually dominates the Detroit Tigers.
In relief, Kyle Farnsowrth gave up a homerun (WHAT A SHOCKER!!!).

Offensively, the Yankees looked good in the first inning, and then that was it. Johnny Damon led off with a double and Derek Jeter singled before a walk and a flyout loaded the bases with one out. Jason Giambi lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score the first run and Melky Cabrera stroked a run-scoring single, one of two hits on the evening, to give New York an early 2-0 lead. After that, the Yankees would only get another 2 hits, and remain scoreless.

Thursday night, the Yankees will try to avoid being swept by the Tigers, when they send Ian Kennedy to the mound. oh BOY!!

    GAME NOTES:

    PETTITTE: 6IP, 7H, 5ER, 3SO
    CABRERA: 2-4, 2RBI

Alex Rodriguez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps.

Rodriguez joins injured catcher Jorge Posada on the DL. The Yankees were waiting for additional opinions on Posada’s ailing throwing shoulder before determining whether he needs surgery.

A three-time AL MVP, Rodriguez was sent for an MRI exam Tuesday that revealed a Grade 2 strain. He was put on the DL for the first time since July 2000 with Seattle.

The Yankees have been hit hard by the injury bug this year, and with the combination of bad young pitching, and all these injuries, the Yankees can not afford any more losses of players for a long period of time.

    YANKEES 4
    TIGERS 6

Tuesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees lost to the Detroit Tigers, 6-4. Phil Hughes pitched yet another awful game, only lasting 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs.

Phil Hughes (0-4) has been absolutely horrible this season for the Yankees, and actually heard the boos from the home crowd. Hughes went only 3 2/3 innings, and gave up 6 runs on 8 hits, and he walked 3. The good news actually came in the form of Yankee reliever Ross Ohlendorf, who pitched 3 1/3 innings, and only gave up 1 hit, while striking out 5 Tigers.
The Yankee bullpen did a good job of keeping the Tigers at 6 runs, but it was too much of a hole for the offense to come back from.

Robinson Cano drove in two runs with a homer in the second inning, but then the Yanks stranded the bases loaded on numerous occasions. This season has been a story of leaving way too many men in scoring positions.

The Yankees will play game 2 of the set on Wednesday, when Andy Pettitte faces Bonderman.

    GAME NOTES:
    HUGHES: 3.2 IP, 8H, 6ER
    CANO: 1-5, HR, 2RBI
    JETER: 1-4, RBI

Jorge Posada is headed to the disabled list for the first time in his career following a recurrence of the right shoulder injury.

“I’m going on the DL,” Posada said. “I think we’ve got to be smart about it. It’s not getting any better, so we’ve got to find out what it really is. The MRIs show a strained muscle, and I think it’s more than that. I want to find out.”

Posada said that he wants to visit Dr. James Andrews, the noted Birmingham, Ala.-based orthopedic surgeon.

The Yankees purchased the contract of 26-year-old Chris Stewart from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to provide an immediate backup for New York on Monday as it completed it’s series in Cleveland.

We will have more on the Injury as news develops.

    YANKEES 5
    INDIANS 2

Monday night in Cleveland, the Yankees earned a split of the series with a 5-2 victory over the Indians. Mike Mussina pitched well, and the Yankees put together a 4 run sixth inning, to rally for the win.

Mike Mussina limited the Indians to two runs on 7 hits over five innings. Mussina held the Indians scoreless for the first 4 inning, but ran into trouble in the 5th inning. Cleveland touched Mussina for 2 runs, but the damage could have been much worse as the bases were loaded. Mussina left the game trailing 2-0, but the Yankees scored 4 runs to give him the win. The bullpen combination of Albaladejo, Farnsworth, Chamberlain and Rivera, held the Indians scoreless the rest of the way.

Offensively, the Yankees were held hitless, until the 6th inning. Melky Cabrera broke up the no-hitter with an infield single to open a four-run sixth inning. Following Cabrera’s hit, Laffey allowed two more singles to load the bases before nicking Alex Rodriguez with a pitch, forcing in a run. Jason Giambi and Hideki Matsui followed with run-scoring groundouts, both to first base, giving the Yankees the lead and chasing Laffey. Bobby Abreu single to left. Matsui added an RBI double off Lewis in the eighth.

The Yankees split the series with the Tribe, and finally get to go home. The Yankees will open a series at the Stadium on Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers.

    GAME NOTES:
    MUSSINA: 5IP, 7H, 2ER, 2SO
    MATSUI: 1-4, 2RBI

    YANKEES 1
    INDIANS 0

Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, the Yankees shutout the Indians, 1-0. Chien-Ming Wang pitched a gem, outdueling defending AL Cy Young Award winner C.C. Sabathia, hurling seven scoreless innings and stopping the Yankees winless steak.

Wang (5-0) struck out a season-high nine, one shy of his career high, and only allowed one baserunner to get as far as third base in the effort. Wang continued his undefeated opening to the campaign and finished the month of April 5-0, scattering four hits while walking two in a 113-pitch performance. Wang gave way to Chamberlain and Rivera, which closed the deal for the Yankees.

Offensively, the Yankees didn’t do much to help Wang, as their only run came on a Melky Cabrera homerun in the 5th inning. C.C. Sebathia yelled a few words at Cabrera as he rounded the bases after his homerun, apparently angery at Melky for slowly running the bases. Sebathia did alot of talking the rest of the game, but too bad for him, he lost. Maybe he should learn hw to wear a baseball hat correctly while he is at it.

The Yankees will try to earn a split of the 4 game series on Monday, as Mike Mussina will take the mound.

    GAME NOTES:
    WANG: 7IP, 4H, 0ER, 9K
    CABRERA: 1-3, HR

Wednesday night in Chicago, the Yankees took their second straight game against the White sox, 6-4. Mike Mussina rebounded this game, and actually pitched a good game for the Yankees. Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon each drove in two runs in the win.

Mike Mussina (2-3) pitched seven strong innings, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out three in a 101-pitch performance. Mussina gave up only 2 earned runs before handing the game over to the bullpen.
Latroy Hawkins gave up 2 runs, and was relieved by Mariano Rivera who pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.

Jorge Posada drove home two runs with a double to center field in the fifth inning, but the Yankees broke it open with three runs in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single by Derek Jeter and Damon’s two-run double — his seventh RBI in the past three games.

The Yankees will go for the sweep of the White Sox on Thursday night.

Tuesday night in Chicago, the Yankees defeated the White Sox 9-5. Chien-Ming Wang improved his record to 4-0 on the season, and Bobby Abreu hit a grand slam to give the Yanks the win.

Chien-Ming Wang (4-0), scattered three runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out five over 105 pitches, before turning the ball over to the bullpen for the seventh. Wang pitched into trouble many times, but managed to pitch out of it. It wasn’t one of his best performances, but he gave the Yankees what they needed. In the bullpen, Kyle Farnsworth gave up another homerun (GEE SURPRISE).

The Yankees put a first-inning run on the board against Contreras when Damon led off the game with a double, moved up on a hit and scored on a Hideki Matsui fielder’s choice. The Yanks added another in the second inning when Giambi clubbed his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center field. The big blow of the game came in the seventh inning with the Yanks down 4-2, when Bobby Abreu hit his seventh career grand slam and his first as a Yankee, to give them a 6-4 lead. Johnny Damon added a three-run shot in the 8th to ice the game.

The Yankees will pitch Mike Mussina tomorrow in the 2nd game of the series.

    joba.jpg

Hank Steinbrenner told The New York Times on Sunday that the club should move Chamberlain into the rotation as soon as possible.
“I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now,” Steinbrenner told the newspaper. “There is no question about it, you don’t have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don’t do that. You have to be an idiot to do that.”

Brian Cashman repsonded “Joba’s staying in the bullpen right now,” Cashman told the newspaper. “That’s where we’re at. [Putting him in the rotation is] not something that’s going to happen here early on, and [Hank] knows that. We’ve talked about it. I don’t know what set him off.”

It is clear that Hank is in panic mode right now, because Ian Kennedy and Phil hughes have not pitched as expected to start the season. However, you can not rush and panic, because that only leads to bad decisions. It is very early on, and the weather hasn’t been great either…. so lets se what Kennedy and Hughes can do first. Also… I don’t see much in Joba Chamberlain as a starter anyway. Anytime he has gone more than a few innings, he gets hit hard. Why would you ruin a GREAT situation by having Joba-Rivera as a knockout blow at the end of every game….. afterall…it’s what got the Yanks their championship in 1996.
