Monday will mark Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. This will not be just any home opener….as it will be the FINAL home Opener at the current Yankee Stadium, and the first opening day without Joe Torre in 12 years.

The Yankees will open up the season with a great pitching matchup which will include Ching-Mien Wang vs Roy Halladay, as the Yanks take on the Toronto Blue Jays. The start will come on Wang’s 28th birthday, and he will be coming off a seaon in which he tied a career high in wins for the second consecutive season, going 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 30 starts and establishing a career high with 104 strikeouts.

“I’m very happy,” Wang said. “This is my first time on Opening Day. For me, it’s big. I’m very excited. It shows that the coaches trust me. I still have a lot to learn.”

In what will be a historical season at Yankee Stadium, which will include the Final Season in the current stadium, a new coaching regime with Joe Girardi, and the 2008 All-Star Game in the summer….. it is only right that a 27th Championship should cap off this memorable season!!

    GOOD LUCK YANKS!!

Say goodbye to Legends Field… Say hello to George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Yankees’ Spring Training home was officially renamed in honor of principal owner George M. Steinbrenner on Thursday.

George and his sons stood on the field as the new name was unvieled on the outfield wall, and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” played over the load speakers. The crowd gave a standing ovation.

“This is a great day,” George Steinbrenner said. “It really makes me proud.”
It’s an emotional day,” Hal Steinbrenner said. “We’ve been here over 30 years and we’re part of the community. It’s a great honor. It’s hard not to be emotional. … There’s probably part of him that’s a little uncomfortable with the recognition, but he absolutely appreciates it. I know he’s honored and I know he’s emotional. You can take a look at him and see that.”

A great “fitting” situation occurred later on, whenb Derek Jeter christened the stadium with a homerun. It’s only right that Jeter would hit the first homer in the newly named ballpark.

With a street already named after Steinbrenner in Tampa, the area also plans to adorn an educational facility with the name of baseball’s longest-tenured owner. George M. Steinbrenner High School will open its doors in 2009 in Hillsborough County, north of Tampa.

The facility formerly known as Legends Field has been the Spring Training home of the Yankees since 1996, and has the same field dimensions as Yankee Stadium in New York.

The Yankees have reshuffled their starting rotation to accommodate left-hander Andy Pettitte, who has been pushed back to the third game of the season because of back spasms. Pettitte has been sidelined since last week, when he felt tightness in his lower back while driving home from Legends Field.

Pettitte was originally going to start in game #2 of the season behind Chien-Ming Wang, but now it is rumored that Mike Mussina will be taking start #2, and pushing Pettitte back to the 3rd spot.

“I just want to be healthy now,” Pettitte said. “Did I want to pitch game two? Of course I did. That’s where they lined me up to pitch. The important thing for me right now is that I want to be healthy. If I miss a start, it’s not the end of the world.
“I’m encouraged right now that they’re not talking about skipping a turn. It’s progressing, and I feel like I will start in that first series.”

The rotation will now feature Chien-Ming Wang starting on Opening Day, followed by Mussina, then either Pettitte or Phil Hughes, and then Ian Kennedy in the 5th spot. The Yakees will start the season against the Blue Jays on April 1.

On Tuesday, the Yankees travelled to Virginia Tech University to play an exhibition game against the Hokies. The Yankees made the days of every player on VA Tech by not only sharing the field and playing ball…but also giving them memories that will last forever.

After Alex Rodriguez was removed from the game, he went spent the remainder of the game in the Va tech dugout. Rodriguez gave away a pair of bats, his wristband and batting gloves by asking trivia questions about himself.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi also contributed. He had 50 lineup cards printed out and signed each one, in addition to giving Tech coach Pete Hughes the team’s large dugout card.

All of the players brought their digital cameras and posed for pictures with the Yankees as they finished taking batting practice.

VA Tech catcher, Anthony Sosnoskie, got ot talk to all the Yankee players as they came up to bat, and it was a memorable day for him. Also, several gathered around Yankees general manager Brian Cashman as he let them try on his diamond-encrusted World Series ring.

The Yankees won the game 11-0, but Tuesday was a day in which the score did not matter. YANKEES 8
    RED SOX 4

Monday in preseason play, the Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-4. Although it’s only preseason, it’s always fun to see the Yanks beat the Sox.

Andy Pettitte threw 65 pitches, lasting 3 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on three hits. Pettitte actualy pitched better than the stats show. One of the hits which led to a run, was when Johnny Damon lost a fly ball in the sunlight. Jonathan Albaladejo threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings and lefty Billy Traber, continuing his bid to be in New York’s bullpen, threw 1 2/3 scoreless, striking out two. Albaladejo is the pitcher which I predicted wouldmake huge contributions this season, and thus far, he has proved he is worthy of a spot on the bullpen. If all goes well… he can replace Kyle Farnsworth in the bullpen.

At the plate, the Yankees once again put up a load of runs. Hideki Matsui kicked off a three-RBI day with a ground-rule double down the left-field line to score the first two, and Robinson Cano followed with a two-run single to left. Bobby Abreu bashed his second spring homer an inning later, a towering two-run shot into the right-field party deck.

The Yankees are on their way to Virginia Tech University on Tuesday, boarding a morning flight to play a 3 p.m. exhibition with the Hokies at English Field. Jeff Karstens makes the start for New York, who will bring all of their “A” position players except for Hideki Matsui

Yankees first baseman Shelley Duncan and outfielder Melky Cabrera were each suspended three games for their roles in Wednesday’s benches-clearing incident against the Rays. Tampa Bay outfielder Jonny Gomes was also suspended two games for his involvement. All three players were fined, along with Yankees manager Joe Girardi and coaches Kevin Long and Bobby Meacham.

These suspensions are actually going to start at the beginning of the Regular season!! You would think that they would suspend them for a few preseason games, but they will actually be suspended for the furst 3 games of the regular season.

Melky Cabrera actually got suspended because after reviewing video tape of the whole incident, Cabrera was seen landing a punch to the back of the head of Rays third baseman Evan Longoria. The Yankees will open the regular season at home against the Blue Jays on March 31, while the Rays will open against the Orioles in Baltimore on the same date.

“If you truly in your heart believe that there’s a right way to go about stuff, you should be true to yourself,” Duncan said. “I’ll continue to play the game with the same intensity.”

“Shelley plays hard all the time,” Jeter said. “He breaks up two, he runs hard all the time and that’s just the type of player he is. That’s why he’s got the opportunity he’s got. If I was Shelley, I wouldn’t change the way I play the game. There’s no reason to change the way he plays the game.”

HATS OFF to the Yankees….. STAY AGGRESSIVE!!!!
Now lets see how many times pitchers want to hit A-Rod and Jeter!!

If you are like me, you are tired of seeing the Yankees over the past 12 years, just sit there and watch their big players get hit. Numerous times, Jeter, and A_Rod have been hit by pitches, and the Yankees NEVER respond. Under Joe Torre, the Yankees were a laid back, “weak” team.

Fast forward to 2008, under Joe Girardi. It’s only pre-season, and we already see the MAJOR difference in attitude.
Last week, Tampa Bay infielder Elliott Johnson nailed Yankee catcher Francisco Cervelli in a home-plate collision, breaking Cervellis’ wrist. In the rematch of the two squds on Wednesday, the Yankees came out swinging.
First, Yankee starter Heath Phillips was ejected in the first inning for grazing Rays third baseman Evan Longoria with an up-and-in fastball.
Next, Shelley Duncan was going for a double, and when the ball beat him by about 15 feet, he slid with his spikes up into Tampa shortstop, Aki Iwamura.

After the collision, the unpire promptly threw out Duncan, and then Tampa outfielder Jonny Gomes charged Duncan from behind and at least one punch appeared to be thrown. The benches then cleared.

Whether the slide was “dirty” or “not dirty” isn’t the main issue here. The main issue is that FINALLY, the Yankees look like they will back each other up, and not be the standing punching bag of the MLB. I’m tired of watching teams hit Jeter, A-Rod, and Cano on a regular basis, while the Yankees never retaliate. Hopefully, this is a sign of a new era and anew attitude, in which the Yankee play with more heart and aggression.

Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte was scratched from his scheduled start today, with inflammation in his pitching elbow, but the team is optimistic that the ailment will prove to be relatively minor.

“They’re extremely cautious here,” Pettitte said. “I guess it’s good. Obviously I want to pitch but I understand. They don’t want me to aggravate it more and it’s Spring Training.”

Basically, this appears to be nothing serious, as Andy Pettitte petitioned to take the mound today, but Yankee management would rather stay on the side of caution.

    YANKEES 6
    BLUE JAYS 1

Chien-Ming Wang pitched 3.2 innings, and allowed two hits, struck out one and walked none, as the Yankees beat the Jays 6-1. This was good news for the Yankees, because Wang struggled in his last appearance.

Bobby Abreu stroked a two-run double to center field in the first inning, giving the Yankees a quick 2-0 lead. Alex Rodriguez followed with a two-run home run over the center-field wall, A-Rod’s second homer of the spring. Jason Lane clubbed a solo homer leading off the sixth.

The Yankees travel south to St. Petersburg Today, meeting up with the Rays at Progress Energy Park. Andy Pettitte was scheduled to start, but was scratched this morning with some tendenitus in his elbow.
