As Spring Training enters week #2, the Yankees pitchers have started thowing to the Yankee batters. Although it is pitching behind a screen, and just working out some pitches, batters seem to praise how Wang and Mussina have looked in the early going.
Joba Chamberlain has been working on an array of pitches, in the event that he may be starting at some point during the season. Joba primarily pitched fastballs 99% of the time last season, mixed in with a slider. Now he is working on a change-up and a few other pitches to complete his repretoir. “Whether I start or relieve, I’m going to need them all at some time or another,” Chamberlain said. “We can’t all be so gifted to throw a great cutter [like Mariano Rivera]. We’ve got to be able to do other things.”
As I mentioned in an early blog a few weeks back, Jonathan Albaladejo, who was aquired form the Nationals, may be a surprise “go to guy” in the bullpen along with Hawkins. The 25-year-old right-hander, pitched to a 1.88 ERA in 14 games for the Nationals. “I think I’m a contender for a spot in the bullpen,” Albaladejo said. “Hopefully, I get a chance, but I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

Alex Rodriguez had to make an official statement Thursday, calrifying what he meant in a recent statement in which he said “I was tested “nine or 10 times” for performance-enhancing drugs last year.”
The media ran with the quote, suggesting that only players that have failed a drug test would be forced to take that many tests. A-Rod cleared the air by saying “I was simply stating just for the sake of saying that I think we have a very good testing system,” Rodriguez said Thursday. “Obviously, I wasn’t being specific. I was bringing to light that I think we have a very effective testing system in place, and I was commending Major League Baseball.”
The problem, is that the media tries to take every single comment made, as a testimony or literal statement. Every reporter is just trying to make the next story, without even verifying what they have.
Its time for baseball… and the FANS are ready to see and talk baseball… however, the media will not let the steroid thing go. What does it take for these morons to realize, that NOBODY CARES!! The ONLY people that care about the steroid issue, is the MEDIA because it gives them something to write about.
When YANKEE Stadium is sold out, and fans are cheering and watching the games….and watching a pennant race…. do you think they are worried about who is doing steroids??? NO!!!
Get over it already…its played out!!
“I think the lesson is, you’ve got to be very, very specific with what you say,” Rodriguez said. “Everything can come back and people are going to ask. I’ve learned my lesson.”

Some of Todays Spring Training Happenings:
Robinson Cano reported to Legends Field today, after signing his new contract. “It means a lot to me,” said Cano of the deal that, with a two-year option, could keep him in pinstripes through the 2013 season. “It made me feel so excited, because I want to stay here, knowing I’m going to be here for the next four years.”
Cano had mentioned that he is going to miss Larry Bowa, who was a mentor to him. Of course thats not the only change in personell, as Joe Torre is also not at Spring Training for the Yankees for the first time in 12 years.
Derek Jeter commented on Torre not being there: “I really don’t think it was that much of an adjustment, but it was weird not seeing Mr. T out there,” Jeter said. “I’ve always said throughout the years that I couldn’t imagine playing here without [Torre]. Now I can … but you wish him the best. You understand it’s a business and there are changes to be made.”
Andy Pettitte also got ot throw his first pitches of the year, as he threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session. Andy said: “”My arm feels good; my legs, on the other hand …” he joked after workouts. “I need to get my legs up underneath me. It’s just with everything that’s been going on, a few trips to Washington, D.C., and back and spending days there has taken its toll.”
No bullpen sessions are scheduled for Thursday, so the pitching staff may rest and prepare for live batting practice during Friday’s workouts. … Half of the Yankees’ starting infield — Cano and Jeter — took infield practice on the main diamond at Legends Field while the others — first basemen Jason Giambi and Shelley Duncan, along with Rodriguez — got their reps on one of the practice fields behind the stadium.

Chien-Ming Wang had asked for $4.6 Million, while the Yankees were offering $4 Million, in the latest of arbitration cases. This was Wang’s first year of arbitration eligibility, and he will not reach free agency until 2011.
The Yankees won the arbitration case, so Chien-Ming Wang will be making $4 Million. Although Wang did not win, the offer of $4 Million which he will be getting this season, is stil a substantial number and upgrade for Wang.
The 27-year-old Wang earned $489,500 last season, when he was 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 30 starts for the Yankees, walking 59 and striking out 104 in 199 1/3 innings.
I would guess that in the next few years, the Yankees will agree on a long term deal with Wang, if he keeps putting up numbers like he has the past few years.

The Yankees will rename Legends Field, their Spring Training complex for the past 13 years, George M. Steinbrenner Field, according to a statement released by the team on Thursday.
“I am humbled and flattered to have this outstanding and totally unexpected honor conferred on me,” Steinbrenner said in a statement. “I extend my thanks to the Tampa City Council and to the Hillsborough County Commissioners for passing resolutions suggesting and recommending the change. I also thank my family for supporting the renaming of the stadium and for everything they have done for so many years that helped bring about this great day.”
“Our father has always made clear how much he values Tampa’s role in playing host to the New York Yankees’ Spring Training and the Tampa Yankees,” Steinbrenner’s sons Hank and Hal said in a statement. “The outpouring of community support for this name change has been wonderful to watch, and we’re very grateful for the acknowledgment of his achievements and contributions it represents.”
The Yankees have used “Legends Field” in Tampa since 1996. Aside from the NY Yankees attracting millions of visitors and tourists to the Tampa area, George Steinbrenner has contributed greatly to the community of Tampa.

As I have suggested since the end of last season, it looks as if Joba Chamberlain will start out the season in the bullpen. The Yankees claim that their plan for Joba is to start him off in the Bullpen for the 2008 season, and then send him to the minors for June so he can get a few starts down there, and then ultimately come up to start by seasons end.
What I see, is what I have been saying along…. I don’t think Joba is a starter!! Why take a guy out of a role in which he was so dominate in, especially when you have a starting 5 in place?? Barring injury to the starting 5, I would say Joba is going to stay in the pen as the setup man.
The Yankees will play this by ear… Basically if Ian Kennedy is successful, and Mike Mussina pitches better this year, than Joba wil stay in the Pen. If Ian Kennedy turns out to be a disaster, than you will see Joba pop up to the starters role, if the Yankees can find someone to step up and take the Set-up man role!!

While those of us up in New York are dealing with 20 degrees and blasts of wintry wind.. the Yankees are ready to report to Tampa this week.
Thursday, Feb. 14 is the offical day to report for Pitchers and Catchers, but some Yankees have already started working out in Tampa.
Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter have already started taking at bats, and pitchers such as Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, IanKennedy, and Jeff Karstens, have started working with pitching coach Dave Eiland.
Position players are supposed to report on Feb. 19, and Spring Training will begin. Joe Girardi, who will be wearing #27, will address the media for the first time as manager in the pinstripes, on Wednesday.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Right-handed reliever Brian Bruney agreed to a one-year, $725,000 contract with the Yankees on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. Bruney was 3-2 with a 4.68 ERA in 58 appearances across two stints with the Yankees in 2007.
Bruney started out looking good for the Yankees last season, but then ran into some trouble later in the season. What was at first glance, an overpowering fastball…slowly became wild pitches and inconsistency.
Bruney will be challenging for the many open spots up for grabs in the Yankees bullpen this upcoming season.
Bruney was one of the arbitration cases that the Yankees had to deal with in this off season, but now there is only one case left, and that may be the most important of all… Chien-Ming Wang.

Being that the 2008 Season is quickly coming upon us, I figured we would take a quick look at the possible Yankee lineup and rotation. nothing offical of course has been announced…but here is what it looks like itmay shape out to be.
Projected batting order
1. LF Johnny Damon
2. SS Derek Jeter
3. RF Bobby Abreu
4. 3B Alex Rodriguez
5. C Jorge Posada
7. 2B Robinson Cano
8. CF Melky Cabrera
9. 1B Shelley Duncan
** I would assume that the other probable situation would be batting Hideki Matsui at DH with Giambi at 1st base. OR… Putting Matsui in left, with Damon as a DH.
Projected rotation
1. Chien-Ming Wang
2. Andy Pettitte
3. Phil Hughes
4. Joba Chamberlain
5. Mike Mussina
** Of course you have Ian Kennedy awaiting in the wings should Joba or Mussina not work out. I would make an early prediction that Joba will end up back in the bullpen as a set up man, and Ian Kennedy will claim his spot in the starting rotation.
PROJECTED BULLPEN
Closer= Mariano Rivera
Set up man: LaTroy Hawkins
6ht and 7th: Jonathan Albaladejo, Kyle Farnsworth
** Kyle Farnsworth may be given the early opportunity to be the set up man for MO. …but I don’t expect to Joe Girardi to put up with him like Torre did. Expect him to be out of the set up role rather quickly with Hawkins awaiting…and possibly JOBA back in that spot.
As I said……..nothing is official… but this is what I would think the team looks like it is shaping up to be in 2008.
Send us your comments…let us know what you think.
