The Yankees have signed yet another 1B to add to the mix, in the way of Morgan Ensberg. Ensberg, 32, split last season between the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres. He has primarily played third base in his career, but the Yankees would be looking at him as a first baseman.

With San Diego, Ensberg finished his season batting .230 with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs in 115 games. A .265 hitter in 703 Major League games, Ensberg’s best season came in 2005, when he batted .283 with 36 home runs and 101 RBIs for the National League champion Astros, earning his only All-Star selection.

So now the Yankees have Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit on its 40-man roster vying to be the Opening Day first baseman, and Ensberg and Jason Lane now signed to minor league contracts.

We will report back next week when the Yankees sign yet another 1st baseman,

Being that the Mets went and traded away 4 no-name prospects for Nohan Santana….the Yankees figured they would go out and sign a 16 year old Australian kid. Im not joking!!

Kyle Perkins, 16, joins the Yanks after being spotted by a Yankees scout during last year’s under-18 national championship in Western Australia.
Perkins will join the club roster as a catcher in 2010 after he has finished school. His first spring training camp with the Yankees in Florida is likely to be in February, 2010.

    Kyle Perkins

Former Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch agreed Monday to talk to a House committee investigating drug use in baseball, and the session was postponed until later this week.

The appearance is in preparation for a Feb. 13 hearing, which is to include Knoblauch, Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte. Also scheduled to testify are Brian McNamee, the former personal trainer for Clemens and Pettitte, and former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski.

MY question is.. “What is the point???”
The guy does not play baseball anymore, so who really cares?
This whole thing has gotten to a point, where Congress is just trying to prove a point like they have nothing better to do. What does taking retired players into congress really accomplish??
Lets say Knoblauch says “I did steroids” …then what?? IT changes NOTHING…it doesnt improve the current situation either. The whole popint of congress and baseball was to “Take steps towards eliminating steroid use” …yet all it has done is turned into a manhunt for players who dont even play the game anymore.

Note to congress: GIVE IT UP ALREADY…you look stupid!!! You are proving NOTHING, You are not improving the current situation. Get your head out of your asses for once …and do something worthwhile!!

Cano and the Yankees reportedly are closing in on a four-year, $30 million contract that also would include two option years for the second baseman, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Robinson Cano is 25 years old, and is a career .314 hitter in 414 big league games. He has spoken optimistically about hoping to remain with the Yankees on a more permanent basis.
“I would like to go long-term, but they haven’t said anything yet,” Cano said earlier this month at a school appearance in New Jersey. “I hope it happens. If not, I’ll just keep playing.”

This is a must move for the Yankees, as Robinson Cano has been an impressive player. It’s always nice to see a young player, which came up in the organization, make strides and become a permanent fixture in the lineup.

After the Cano deal is finalized, I would say Chien-Ming Wang is next up on the “to-do” list.

Well, as we all have been hearing, the Yankees rotation looks to shape up as follows:

    Chien-Ming-Wang
    Andy Pettitte
    Phil Hughes
    Joba Chamberlain
    Mike Mussina

Now..who knows if that will be the exact order, but the pitchers are pretty much set in place. We will still have Ian Kennedy as an emergency valve for Mike Mussina if he has another bad season.

Personally, I thin Joba is a better fit in the bullpen, because I don’t believe he has what it takes to be a starter. Hopefully, Joba proves me wrong..but if not, we may see Ian Kennedy snatch up his spot, and move Joba to the bullpen.

What do you Yankee fans think about the current rotation??

Alex Rodriguez has been named as a sixth award recipient for this year’s Thurman Munson Awards dinner, acknowledging excellence in competition and philanthropic work within the community.

Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera, Mets third baseman David Wright, former Houston Astros infielder Craig Biggio, New York Knicks shooting guard Jamal Crawford and Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi will also receive “Thurmans” at the 28th annual Munson Awards dinner, to be held Feb. 5 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square.

“It is a privilege and honor to receive the Munson Award,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “Knowing of Thurman’s legacy in the storied history of the Yankees franchise, and how much the dinner has done to assist children through AHRC NYC Foundation, it is a special honor that I will always cherish.”

The Yankees started the arbitration process with Robinson Cano, Chien-Ming Wang and Brian Bruney. The requests filed by representatives for Cano and Wang, two of the Yankees’ prized younger components, were separated by $50,000. Cano filed for $4.55 million and was offered $3.2 million by the club, while Wang requested $4.6 million and was offered $4 million.

Even though this process must be started… I would say that it is a 99.9% chance that Cano and Wang will be signed to long term deals to remain in Pinstripes.

Brian Bruney requested $845,000 and was offered $640,000. Being that the numbers are relatively close, I would say that the Yankees would come to an agreement if they had any plans of having him pitch in Pinstripes this season.

The Yakees also signed an extension with Wilson Betemit this week, avoiding arbitration. Betemit will be competing with Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and non-roster invitee Jason Lane to serve as New York’s Opening Day first baseman.

The ongoing saga of whether or not the Yankees will trade for Johan Santana, seems to have strayed back to the side of “no trade”.

“What it comes down to right now is giving up a lot [in a trade] and then having to do the big contract, as well,” Steinbrenner said. “If [Santana] was just a free agent, we could just go ahead and do it. There’s a big difference this way. We have to sign him as if he’s a free agent, plus you have to give up major talent. That’s a tall order.”

It would be nice to get Johan Santana in pinstripes…however, I also do not want to see the Yanks part ways with good young talent such as: Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and Melky Cabrera.
Right now..I am comfortable with our starting rotation.

Rich “Goose” Gossage, who was a NY Yankee with the Yankees (1978-83, 89), was elected on Tuesday in his ninth year on the ballot. Gossage finished his career as a Mariner in 1994 with a 124-107 record, 1,502 strikeouts and a 3.01 ERA. His 310 saves are 17th on the all-time list, but he never had more than 33 saves in a single season — 1980 with the Yankees.

“This was very emotional, off the charts — I can’t even describe this,” Gossage said about taking the phone call telling him that he was selected. “I’ve waited a while, but there isn’t anybody I’d rather go in with than Dick Williams. He was a great, great manager, and I really enjoyed playing for him.”

The thing most people forget, is that in Gossage’s days, closers did not only come in to pitch 1 inning. Gossages role was to come in and shut the opponent down for 2-3 innings each time he came out on the mound.

Rich Gossage: Ninth year on the ballot … Pitched 22 seasons … Led the AL in saves three times (1975, ‘78, ‘80) … Two seasons with 30-plus saves … Named The Sporting News AL Fireman of the Year in 1975 and ‘78 … Named to nine All-Star teams (1975-’78, ‘80-’82, ‘84-’85) … Finished in top 10 in AL MVP voting twice in 1980 (third) and ‘81 (ninth) … Received Cy Young Award votes in 1975 (T-sixth), ‘78 (fifth), ‘80 (third), ‘81 (sixth) and ‘84 (fifth) … Ranks 17th all-time in saves and 13th in games pitched … Ranks sixth in games finished … One AL Division Series (1981); three saves and no earned runs in 6 2/3 ALDS innings … Four League Championship Series (1978, ‘80, ‘81, ‘84); owns 4.91 ERA and three saves in 11 LCS innings … Three World Series (1978, ‘81, ‘84); owns 2.63 ERA and two saves in 13 2/3 WS innings … Member of 1978 WS championship team.

Roger Clemens filed his own defamation lawsuit against his former trainer for making “false and defamatory” claims in Senator George Mitchell’s report on performance-enhancing-drug use in Major League Baseball.

“All of McNamee’s accusations are false and defamatory per se because they are not true, and they injured Clemens’ reputation and exposed him to public hatred, contempt, ridicule, and financial injury,” the lawsuit states. “McNamee made the allegations with actual malice, knowing they were false.

“The law presumes that McNamee’s false, defamatory per se statements injured Clemens. Moreover, as a proximate result of the publication and republication of McNamee’s false accusations, Clemens’ good reputation has been severely injured. Finally, McNamee’s false allegations have also caused Clemens to suffer mental anguish, shame, public humiliation and embarrassment. Clemens seeks damages for these injuries from McNamee in an amount to be determined by a jury.”

“According to McNamee, he originally made his allegations to federal authorities after being threatened with criminal prosecution if he did not implicate Clemens,” the lawsuit states. “McNamee has stated that he later affirmed his allegations to the Mitchell Commission, again only after being expressly threatened with criminal prosecution.”

Well… to answer a recent “commenter” on this Yankee blog when he asked “If Clemens was not guilty, he would have sued for defamation” …. and I repsonded “Give it time… you can’t sue 24 hours after a claim”…
    Looks like I was RIGHT!!
