Thursday Afternoon, the Yankees and Posada offcially finalized the four-year, $52.4 million contract that should keep Posada in pinstripes through the 2011 season. The deal will make him baseball’s highest-paid catcher, giving him $13.1 million per season.

“I belong a Yankee,” Posada said. “I’m really happy that I got the chance to sign a good contract, and really happy that I got the chance to stay with the Yankees. Going elsewhere, I was going to hear the offers, but the Yankees made it really tough.”
“It’s really tough to stay with one team,” Posada said. “I think the Yankees really made a strong push to keep me in pinstripes, and I was really happy that I got the chance to do that. To have your whole career with one team nowadays is really rare.”

A career .277 hitter, Posada has appeared in 1,432 regular-season games for the Yankees, hitting 218 home runs and driving in 861 runs. However, last season, Posada showed that he can get better with age, putting up career high numbers. Jorge batted .338, and became the only catcher to bat at least .330 with 40 doubles, 20 home runs and 90 RBIs in a season when he caught at least half of his team’s games.

HIP-HIP … JORGE!!!!!!!

The Yankees have started trade discussions with the Minnesota Twins regarding 2-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. Santana was 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA in 33 games for the Twins this season, walking 52 and striking out 235 in 219 innings.

Santana, who turns 29 in March, will not be a free agent until after the 2008 season, but authorized the Twins to begin contacting other clubs about potential trades after initial talks concerning an extension left the two sides roughly $40 million apart.

The Yankees would most likely be forced to part with one of the “Big Three” pitchers — Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, along with a player like Melky Cabrera. Rumor also has it, that Robinson Cano may be asked for by the Twins.

I am all for getting Santana..but at what price?? I 100% would NOT give up Robinson Cano. As far as the big 3 pitchers go… I would give up one of them and another player for Santana. You would be giving up a “potential big arm” for a guy that already is a proven “big Arm”.

Johan Santana would automatically put the Yankees back on top of baseballs pitching staffs. Tell me this wouldnt look good…
    Santana
    Wang
    Pettitte
    Hughes
    Chamberlain
    (Mussina 6th starter fill in)

(OR… put Mussina 5th …and leave Joba in bullpen).

Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed to a $30 million marketing agreement that could raise the total value of his contract to $305 million over 10 years, according to multiple published reports.

The agreement would pay A-Rod an additional $6 million over his contract base for matching Willie Mays with 660 career home runs, Babe Ruth with 714, Hank Aaron with 755 and Barry Bonds with 762 (and possibly counting) — and then an additional $6 million for passing Bonds to become baseball’s all-time home run king.

Here is an idea… how about we give A-Rod an incentive for actually batting .300 in the playoffs??? Who the hell cares about his homeruns….how about he actually does something in the PostSeason for ONCE in his career…and win a Championship??

Joe Girardi made it offical today as to who will be his coaching staff for the 2008 season. Hitting coach Kevin Long and first-base coach Tony Pena will return, while Dave Eiland has been promoted to pitching coach. Rob Thomson becomes the new bench coach, and both third-base coach Bobby Meacham and bullpen coach Mike Harkey — both members of Girardi’s 2006 Marlins’ coaching staff — have joined New York.

“Now that the coaching staff is put together, we can all go to work,” Girardi said. “We’ve already started working on Spring Training and how we’ll approach it. It’s obviously a lot better when you know everyone that you’re going to be working with.”

I think the Dave Eiland move was expected … beause he has worked with the young pitching staff that will be the Yankees rotation this coming year (Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy).

It came to no surprise on Monday, as Alex Rodruguez was named the American League 2007 MVP. A-Rod claimed his third American League MVP Award on Monday, winning the honor for the second time as a Yankee.

Rodriguez established career highs with 143 runs scored and 156 RBIs, leading the Major Leagues with 54 home runs while batting .314.

“For me, it’s been the most magical and most special year of my career so far, for many reasons,” Rodriguez told MLB.com. “Again, not winning the World Series is very disappointing — that’s why you strap it on every Spring Training and that’s why you work so hard in the wintertime.

“But from a personal level, it was very satisfying to be able to come back from ‘06 and show the world what kind of player I am, on the greatest stage in the world, which is the Yankees.”

Yankees longtime closer, Mariano Rivera is expected to accept the Yankees’ three-year, $45 million contract offer early this week. The offer would make Rivera baseball’s highest-paid closer.

Rivera, who turns 38 on Nov. 29, has pitched for the Yankees since 1995, compiling an American League-record 443 saves in the regular season. The most dominant postseason pitcher of his generation, Rivera owns a Major League-record 34 more saves in the playoffs, where he has a 0.77 career ERA. Rivera made 67 relief appearances for the Yankees in 2007, finishing with 30 saves while going 3-4 with a 3.15 ERA.

The Yankees have recently offered Mariano Rivera a 3 year-$45million dollar contract, and Rivera has not accepted. Mariano Rivera is looking for a 4th year in his contract, and the Yankees are only offering 3. However, the amount of money that they Yankees offered Rivera for 3 years, is WAYYY more than any other team would offer.

It seems as if Rivera and his agent are trying to play hard ball with the Yanks….but just like AROD…he will lose. I am a huge fan of Mariano Rivera, but it’s getting to the point with all these players greed, that it starts leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Rivera is 38 years old, and is being an offered a rediculously high amount of money….. JUST PITCH ALREADY!!

Alex Rodriguez and the New york Yankees have agreed to the outline of a 10-year, $275 million contract that would include additional bonuses if he sets the career home run record as a Yankee.

Parameters of the deal, which would be the richest in baseball history, were set in place last weekend when Rodriguez reached out to the club. Rodriguez and his wife, Cynthia, then met with Hank and Hal Steinbrenner on Wednesday in Tampa.

“After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization,” Rodriguez said.

Basically…the way it REALLY went down is like this…
A-Rod and Boras tried to bluff out the Yankees to get over $300million …but the Yankees called Boras’ move, and said they were not interested. Boras and Arod got backed into a wall..because they got their bluff called …and reality is 1)NO TEAM was giving AROD $300 million and 2)AROD didn’t want to end up on some scrub team like the Giants for less than what the Yanks would pay him.
So..AROd had to come crawling back to the Yankees to sign a contract.

All in all… the YANKEES WON!!! The Yankees made Boras and ARod look like morons…and still got the player they wanted, for much less than he was trying to get.

As far as i’m concerned… I wish they didn’t get AROD back…cause he’s a greedy FAKE Yankee ….. BUT..at least they don’t have to trade any yougn arms for Cabrera.

The New York Daily News and The Associated Press reported late Monday that Posada will accept a four-year, $52 million contract from the club. After batting a career-high .338 with 20 home runs and 90 RBIs in 144 games for the Yankees this past season, Posada would have been a coveted figure on the free agent market, but the Yankees did the right thing, and made the move to retain him.

Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada were rewarded with American League Silver Slugger Awards, recognizing their offensive contributions in helping the Yankees to a 94-victory season and the AL Wild Card.

Louisville Slugger’s Silver Slugger Award winners were determined in balloting of Major League coaches and managers who were asked to vote for the players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in both leagues in 2007.

Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, as well as the coaches’ and managers’ general impressions of a player’s overall offensive value. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own team.

Posada won his fifth Silver Slugger Award and his first since 2003. The 36-year-old catcher had a renaissance campaign, batting a career-high .338, ranking fourth in the AL. Posada, who also had 20 homers, 90 RBIs and a career-high 42 doubles, became the first Yankees catcher to finish a season in the league’s top 10 in batting since Thurman Munson in 1978.

Jeter, 33, won his second Silver Slugger Award, having also brought home the honor in 2006. Jeter batted .322 and ranked third in the AL with 206 hits — his sixth 200-hit season, joining Gehrig (eight) as the only players in franchise history with as many as four.

Over the past 10 seasons, Jeter ranks first in the Major Leagues with 1,971 hits and second with 1,154 runs scored. Jeter’s .354 batting average with runners in scoring position ranked eighth in the AL this season, further reinforcement of his long-held reputation as a “clutch” player
