Well… since today is a day off for the Yankees.. I might as well use this time for another rant. Todays rant… Pinch Running for Giambi.
When will Torre learn that he needs to STOP pinch running for Jason Giambi?? There have already been 4 games this season, in which Pinch Running for Jason Giambi has backfired on Torre.
How many time do we have to have players like Kevin Thompson, and Miguel Cairo coming to the plate, in the heart of the line up, with the game on the line, in the 9th inning? (Normally.. it would be Giambi up with runners on base).
You can not pull a hitter like Giambi out of your lineup at the end of a game. Torre seems to not understand the concept of “WHEN to use a pinch runner”.
1) You do not pinch run for a major hitter in the lineup, unless it is a situation where the runner is in scoring position to WIN the game … and you will not need the big bat again.
2) You do not pinch run for a major hitter, when there are 2 outs, and he is on first base, and is not guaranteed he will even be a factor.
3) If you DO pinch run for a major hitter on first base...then you MUST steal second.
4) You do NOT pinch run for a major hitter when there are 2 outs, and he is on second or third base, because even a slow runner is scoring on a hit ANYWAY.
So … in conclusion… STOP PINCH RUNNING FOR GIAMBI… unless its a game winning run. I am tired of seeing backups batting in the 4th and 5th slot of the lineup with the game on the line in the 9th inning.
I’ve seen the Yanks get screwed by this move too many times last year…and already 4-5 times this year!!

RED SOX 7
Sunday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees lost yet another game to the Red Sox, 7-4. The Yankees have lost eight of nine games and, once again, the pitching was no where to be found.
Wang, making his second start since being activated from the disabled list, allowed four runs and six hits in six innings, walking three and striking out two. As he met with reporters after the game, Wang had the tip of his right middle finger bandaged. He said that his early pitches up in the zone could be attributed to not following through, but that his fingernail — which cracked horizontally, a rarity — affected him somewhat on the mound, though he expected to make his next start.
Offensively, the Yankees 4 runs, all came on homers. First, a three-run homer by slumping Doug Mientkiewicz, who connected on his second round-tripper of the season to give the Yankees a lead in the third inning. And then later, in the 8th, Derek Jeter beleted a solo homerun, which would round out all the Yankee offense for the day.
The Red Sox have now defeated the Yankees five times in their first six meetings. “I don’t think the standings are an issue at this point,” Torre said. “We all know we’re going to start winning here sooner or later. Sooner is more appropriate.” The Yankees have now slipped to 6.5 game sback in the AL EAST at the end of April.
The Yankees will next take on the Texas Rangers at Yankee Stadium, starting on Tuesday. Phil Hughes (0-1) vs Kameron Lowe (1-1).
GAME NOTES:
WANG: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3BB, 1K)
MIENTKIEWISCZ: 1-2, 3 RBI, HR
JETER: 1-4, HR, RBI

RED SOX 1
Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees finally stop their 7 game losing streak, with a victory over the Red Sox 3-1. Kei Igawa, that’s right… Kei Igawa actually pitched a gem for the Yankees today.
Jeff Karstens, who started the game, was hit in the right leg by a line drive on his first pitch. Karstens stayed in to pitch to one more batter, but he was lifted after allowing a hit to Kevin Youkilis. Torre called on Kei Igawa to come out of the bullpen to deliver six-plus innings of shutout, two-hit ball. Igawa (2-1) walked four but struck out six, providing the Yankees with the strong starting effort against a potent Boston lineup.
The game was scoreless, until the bottom of the 4th, when Jorge Posada belted an upperdeck, 2 run homer. Later, in the sixth, Melky Cabrera got lucky when his pop to left fell between three Boston fielders and bounced inside the chalk and into the stands. That allowed Posada to trot home with New York's third run off Wakefield.
Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless seventh and Kyle Farnsworth allowed a run in the eighth before Mariano Rivera set the Red Sox down in the ninth inning, recording his first save.
The Yankees will face off against Boston, Sunday afternoon, in the rubber match of the series. Chien-Ming Wang (0-1) vs Julian Tavarez (0-2).
GAME NOTES:
IGAWA: Best outing of his Yankee Career by far. Igawa responded great, coming out of the bullpen, and pitched like he was fully prepared to do so. (6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 6 K).
POSADA: 1-2, 2 RBI, HR, 2BB
JETER: 3-5
CABRERA: 1-4, 1 RBI

The Yankees will give Hughes at least one more turn in the rotation before deciding on whether to keep him in New York or to return him to Triple-A, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. Although his major-league debut was far from dominant, his teammates and coaches were overwhelmingly positive about his outing on Thursday night. Hughes will make his next start against the Rangers next week, although the specific date could depend on the availability of Mike Mussina.

Jeter (knee/thigh bruise) said he was a late scratch from Thursday’s game because he was still sore from being hit by a pitch on Tuesday, NY Newsday reports. Miguel Cairo replaced him at shortstop in a losing effort on Thursday. This doesn’t sound like anything overly serious, so Jeter should be in the lineup for the series opener against the Red Sox on Friday (if there is no Rainout).

BLUE JAYS 6
Thursday night at the stadium, the Yankees lost their 6th game in a row, 6-0 at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. This was the debut of the most talked about Yankee pitching prospect in years, 20-year old Philip Hughes.
Phil Hughes (0-1) began his career by allowing four runs and seven hits in a 4 1/3-inning effort. Hughes ended up with a 91 pitch effort, and didn’t look as bad as the stats would offer. He had a rough first inning, giving up 2 quick runs…but after that, he settled in and pitched pretty decent. Hughes would go on to strike out 5, and walk only one.
On the other hand…the real pitching story of the night, was Toronto’s veteran A.J. Burnett. Burnett limited the Yankees to four hits over seven shutout innings. The Yankees offense looked horrible, being held to 0 runs, and only 4 hits for the entire game. Giambi had 2 hits, and Cano and A-Rod added one hit each, and the rest of the Yankee lineup was held to goose-eggs.]
Derek Jeter sat out this game due to some soreness in his leg, from being hit by a pitch Tuesday night…but is scheduled to return to action Friday, when the Yankees face the Boston Red Sox. Friday nights matchup will be Andy Pettitte (1-0) vs Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-2).
GAME NOTES:
HUGHES: Pitched decent … bad start, settled in nicely. Looked like he had some good stuff…but the Yanks offense didn’t help him out either. (4.1 IP, 4 ER, 5K, 1 BB)
GIAMBI: 2-3
CANO: 1-3
A-ROD: 1-4

WELL, HELLO! MIJA HERE!!
I’m the latest addition to the staff writers of yankstalk.com. (http://blog.myspace.com/mijababy) Mija is a nickname given to me by…eh, that’s not important, but the word is Spanish slang for, “mi hija,” which means, “my daughter,” and it is pronounced “MEE - ha.” Typically, elders refer to a girl or young woman as mija as a term of endearment. Por ejemplo, my very old Cuban neighbor refers to me as “mija” when we have one of our conversations in spanglish…usually getting us no where fast. Anyway…
LET’S GET TO IT: “A-Rod has 14 home runs. The other 10 men in the line-up have 10 runs,” says the announcer with a chuckle. Yes, he HAS been doing his job. But when I went outside for about a half hour while we were down by 4 in the middle of a shut-out game, I returned only to find that the Bronx BOMBERS had managed to achieve a 6 run deficit. They are bombing and not in a good way. Even A-rod was one for three: He hit one DEEP to center field, but it got caught at the wall. On a warmer, still, summer night, it would’ve been out of the park. Never focus on the “could-have-been.” There’s no crying in baseball.
En fin, after 9, the Yankees were shut out by 6 runs against the Blue Jays. Both team’s first shut-outs of their seasons. God bless. Their first time. I’m going to go pray for the boys (and my anger management). ’Cause I’m running out of material. I’m thinking I’m going to have to start writing bios or something b/c you just can’t write about no pitching forever. At least I had our bats to talk about. And all I got tonight was an A-Rod pseudo homer that was caught at the wall…Sweet Jesus. There’s no warning track in the Bronx, right? There used to be one at Shea…many moons ago, but I digress. Here’s one last thought before you hit the hay: Yanks are dead last at 8 and 11. Texas is a half game worse and Kansas City is 2 games worse…depressing, no?!?! AND, on the flip side, after Sunday the Blue Jays had lost 5 games in a row. However, they’ve hailed victorious in ALL their games SINCE Sunday, including games against the Red Sox and Yankees. (I’m just glad th Red Sox lost a few.) My point is that I’m not too worried about the Blue Jays. I’m just worried about our pitching.
(http://blog.myspace.com/mijababy) G’night and good
luck.

Wednesday nights matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays has been rained out. This rain out, actually may have benefited the Yankees. Thrusday night, the Yanks will throw Phillip Hughes against Toronto …and will save Andy Pettitte for Friday nights game against the Boston Red Sox.
“I’m going to throw a little bit off the mound and just do what my normal routine would be today,” Pettitte said following the announcement that the game had been washed out. “I’ll do a little throwing and lifting and get ready for Friday.”
Manager Joe Torre said that the team would choose between Karstens and Igawa for Saturday’s start, with a decision expected on Thursday. Karstens allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings at Fenway Park last Saturday, and Igawa was tagged for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Devil Rays at Tropicana Field on Monday.
Not only did the Rain Out help with the pitching rotation, but it also gave a needed day off for injured players, like Derek Jeter. Jeter left Tuesday’s game after the top of the first inning, having been hit in the left thigh by a 91-mph Scott Kazmir fastball. Though Jeter said he would have been unable to run if he’d continued in the game, he reported feeling better on Wednesday, though he wasn’t sorry to see the game washed out.
“I’m sore,” Jeter said. “Any time you have extra time, it’s going to help.”

In 2006, a record 76 million fans poured through the turnstiles at big league parks. The New York Yankees led the league with attendance (the fourth consecutive year the Bronx Bombers have done so) with 4.2 million, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers (3.8 million), New York Mets (3.4 million) and St. Louis Cardinals (3.4 million).
Not only do the Yankees draw the biggest crowds, but they also gain the most money from television rights and they sell the most merchandise. Amongst those teams that run their own sports channels, the Yankees raked in the most, with $67 million in rights fees from their YES network.
Adding all of this up, and then in addition…the fact that the New York Yankees will have a brand new stadium under their belt in a few years… the Yanks will be heads above the rest of the MLB teams in their worth.
The Yankees new stadium, scheduled to open in 2009, will increase revenues by at least $50 million annually.
TOP 5 MLB TEAM VALUES
1 New York Yankees ($1200 Million)
2 New York Mets ($736 Million)
3 Boston Red Sox ($724 Million)
4 Los Angeles Dodgers ($632 Million)
