YANKEES 5
TIGERS 2

Saturday afternoon, the Yankees defeated the Tigers, 5-2. Darrell Rasner continued to prove that he belongs in the rotation, with his second straight quality start in as many starts. The 27-year-old Rasner hurled six innings of two-run ball and Derek Jeter hit his first home run to lead the Yankees to victory.

Darrell Rasner went six innings, giving up 2 earned runs, while scattering four hits while walking one and striking out one in the effort. Rasner really only allowed 1 run (a first inning homerun), and then Kyle Farnsworth allowed a runner which Rasner left on 1st base (gee surprise). Joba Chamberlain threw a hitless eighth, striking out one, and then Mariano Rivera worked a scoreless ninth to record his 10th save of the season.

Derek Jeter got the Yankees on the board with his first homerun of the year. The homerun was a solo shot in the first inning. Melky Cabrera also worked a bases-loaded walk off Bonderman in the first to provide Rasner with two early runs. In the 4th inning, Robinson Cano worked a two-out walk and scored on Wilson Betemit’s double to deep center to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Bobby Abreu and Jason Giambi would later hit run scoring doubles to up the lead, leading to a 5-2 victory.

The most important outcome of the game, was the fact that Darrell Rasner has now pitched two great games in a row, upping his record to 2-0 in his role filling in. Rasner may be earning a permanent role in the rotation.

GAME NOTES:
RASNER: 6IP, 4H, 2ER, 1SO
JETER: 2-5, HR, RBI
ABREU: 2-4, RBI

    YANKEES 5
    TIGERS 6

Friday night in Detroit, the Yankees fell short at a comeback attempt, and lost to the Tigers, 6-5. Kei Igawa only lasted 3 innings, as he attempted to take Ian Kennedy’s spot in the rotation, but did not pitch any better. The Yankees trailed 6-2 in the 9th inning, and made a comeback which fell just short.

Kei Igawa, who made his first start of the season for the Yankees, got hit hard. Igawa only lasted 3 innings, giving up 11 hits, and 6 earned runs. An even scarier stat, is that he recorded just two swinging strikes among the 64 pitches he threw. Kei Igawa was horrible in his outings last season, and looked horrible in this outing… which shows that it is time to give up on the Igawa experiment.

Offensively, Jason Giambi connected on a homerun in the 2nd inning to give the Yankees their first run. The Yankees trailed 6-2 in the 9th inning, and put a rally together of fof Tigers closer, Todd Jones.
With the lead cut to 6-5, the Yankees had runners on 1st and 2nd, and shelley Duncan lined out to left center field to end the game. Robinson Cano also had a strong night, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Saturday afternoon, the Yankees and Tigers will play game 2 of the set, when the Yankees send Darryl Rasner to the mound to face Bonderman.

    GAME NOTES:
    IGAWA: 3IP, 11H, 6ER
    CANO: 2-4, RBI
    GIAMBI: 2-4. HR, RBI

Wednesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees lost their second consecutive game to the Indians, 3-0. Chien-Ming Wang picked up his first loss of the season, although he pitched very well. Clevelands pitcher, Cliff Lee shutout the Yankees, and continued his hot start.

Chien-Ming Wang (6-1) pitched 7 innings, givng up only 3 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 4 Indians. Wang pitched a good game, but was outdone by Cliff Lee who gave up 0 runs on 6 hits.

The only offensive note is that Hideki Matsui extended his hitting streak to 16 games in the loss, equaling his career high.

    YANKEES 3
    INDIANS 5

Tuesday night at the Stadium did not go according to the usual script.
Andy Pettitte pitched a good 6 1/3 innings, and handed it over to Joba Chamberlain…. and Joba actually blew the game. The Yankees fell to the Indians, 5-3.

Andy Pettitte hurled 6 1/3 innings of solid two-run ball, giving up only two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out six. When Pettitte left the game with a 3-2 lead, everyone figured that the Joba-Rivera combo was in order to finish it off. However, Joba Chamberlain walked two batters, and then served up a pinch-hit three-run homer to David Dellucci, to give the tribe a 5-3 lead.

Offensively, Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano, who both have been struggling basly, came through with run scoring hits in the 4th to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Hideki Matsui kept his hot bat going, with a 3-3 game, and Jason Giambi had 2 RBI on the night.

The Yankees will play game 2 of the series on Wednesday, and try to rebound with the undefeated Chien-Ming Wang on the mound for the Yanks.

    GAME NOTES:
    PETTITTE: 6.1IP, 5H, 2ER, 6SO
    MATSUI: 3-3
    GIAMBI: 1-3, RBI

    YANKEES 8
    MARINERS 2

On Sunday at the Stadium, the Yankees completed a sweep of the Seattle Mariners, 8-2. Darrell Rasner was just what the Yankees needed, as he stepped into the starters spot, and gave the Yankees a quality start, pitching six strong innings in his season debut to help the Yankees cruise to victory.

Darrell Rasner gave up a two-out single that was followed by a two-run homer by Adrian Beltre in the first inning. After that, he gave up only three hits in a six-inning effort that included four strikeouts and no walks. the bullpen stayed sharp, with the combination of Ohlendorf, Farnsworth, and Rivera pitching 3 shutout innings.

Offensively, Derek Jeter had a huge day, going 4-5, with an RBI. Jeter now has 7 hits in his last 9 at bats. Bobby Abreu singled home the first Yankees run, and Hideki Matsui hit a ground-rule double to drive home another. Jason Giambi contributed a sacrifice fly before Melky Cabrera slammed his team-leading sixth home run for two more runs, and Robinson Cano followed with a solo shot.
Damon, Jeter, Abreu and Matsui, the top four hitters in the order, were 11-for-18 with six runs scored and four RBIs.

This was a big win for the Yankees, because it gave them a much needed sweep of a series, as well as having Rasner fill in so nocely for Phil Hughes. If Rasner can continue to contribute like this, he may find himself in the permanant rotation.

The Yanks will have a day off on Monday, and then start a series with the Cleveland Indians at the Stadium, when Pettitte faces Carmona in game 1.

    GAME NOTES:
    RASNER: 6IP, 5H, 2ER, 4SO
    JETER: 4-5, RBI
    ABREU: 3-4, RBI

Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, the Yankees won their second straight game against the Seattle Mariners, 6-1. Mike Mussina gave the Yankees a strong 6 innings of one-run ball, during which he struck out five and walked none.

Mike Mussina (4-3), who won his third consecutive start, has given up just five earned runs in 18 innings during that stretch. The victory was the 254th of his career. The bullpen combination of Hawkins, Ramirez, and Veras held the Mariners to no runs on 1 hit in 3 innings of work.

Johnny Damon was the story offensively, as he doubled and scored in his first two at-bats and put the Yankees ahead by five runs with a two-run homer, his fourth, in the sixth inning. Damon led off the bottom of the first with a double to right-center field, and then scored the first run of the game on a single by Bobby Abreu.
In the 3rd inning, Damon got it started again, as he ripped another double, and Jeter followed with a double of his own to score Damon. Later on in the 6th inning, Damon hit a 2 run homer, to give the Yankees a 6-1 lead.

The Yankees go into Sundays game looking for a much needed sweep of the series. Darrell Rasner will get his first start of the season, in place of an injured Phil Hughes.

    MARINERS 1

Friday night at the Stadium, the Yankees ended their 3 game losing streak, with a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Chien-Ming Wang pitched yet another gem, holding the Mariners to just 1 run, and staying unbeaten for the season at 6-0.

Chien-Ming Wang (6-0), scattered only three hits and allowed one run in six innings of work. Wang pitched 5 scoreless innings, until Ichiro got a basehit and then proceded to steal second and third base, and scored on a weak groundball. Wang struck out 5 batters, and left the game after the 6th inning, due to some soreness in his finger. The win improved Wang to 6-0, making him the American League’s first six-game winner this season.

The Yankees scored their runs thanks largely in part to shaky Seattle defense. The Mariners had 4 errors on the night, which lead to Yankee runs. Hideki Matsui’s RBI single to left in the 1st inning scored Jeter for the first Yankee run, and then they tacked on 2 more runs in the second. Melky Cabrera brought Ensberg and Alberto Gonzalez home on two-run double to left, giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead.

The Yankees desperately needed this performance by Wang, and will look to build on it in game 2 of the set on Saturday afternoon. The Yankees will pitch Mike Mussina.

    GAME NOTES:
    WANG: 6IP, 3H, 1ER, 5 SO
    CABRERA: 1-4, 2RBI

    TIGERS 8

Thursday night at the Stadium, the Yankees were swept in the 3 game series by the Detroit Tigers, losing the final game, 8-4. Ian Kennedy gave up 4 runs, but after the Yankees tied the game at 4-4, Detroit regained the lead in the sixth against Albaladejo.

Ian Kennedy retired seven of the first Tigers he faced, but was touched for four runs and four hits in the third inning. In only 4 2/3 innings work, Kennedy finished at 96 pitches (57 for strikes), allowing five hits while walking three and throwing a wild pitch. Kennedy was lifted for Albaladejo with two outs in the fifth inning, the fourth time in six starts this season that Kennedy has not been able to go at least five innings.
Albaladejo got roughed up as well, giving up 6 hits and 4 earned runs, while getting the loss.

Offensively, it was like a repeat of the previous game. The Yankees attacked early on in the first inning, and then went quiet. The Yanks put up 3 runs in the first inning, in which the first four Yankees reached base against left-hander Nate Robertson, including a line drive three-run homer to right by Bobby Abreu. Shelley Duncan’s single in the 5th, tied the game at 4-4, but thats all the Yankees would score.

The Yankees being swept at home was not a pretty site, and neither was watching Ian Kennedy not be able to go 5 innings again. Chien-Ming Wang will take the mound to start the series on Friday against the Seattle Mariners. Wang will be going for a 6-0 start, and has become the most consistant starter on the Yankee staff.

    GAME NOTES:
    KENNEDY: 4.2IP, 4H, 4ER
    ABREU: 2-4, HR, 3RBI
    JETER: 2-4
    DUNCAN: 1-4, RBI

    No..this is not a joke….
I am NOT making this up…
Yet ANOTHER Yankee will join the DL…

    PHIL HUGHES!!

Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique. Hughes, 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this month. Phil Hughes joins Jorge Posada, and Alex rodriguez as the most notable Yankees on the DL at the moment.

The Yankees could have an option at Triple-A in 27-year-old right-hander Darrell Rasner, who is 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA.

    TIGERS 6

Wednesday night at the Stadium, the Yankees dropped another game to the Detroit Tigers, 6-2. Andy Pettitte was cruising along until the 5th inning, when Marcus Thames hit a 2 run homer, and then in the 6th inning, Polanco added another homerun.

Andy Pettitte (3-3) worked six innings, scattering seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Pettitte gave up 5 earned runs, which was unusual because he usually dominates the Detroit Tigers.
In relief, Kyle Farnsowrth gave up a homerun (WHAT A SHOCKER!!!).

Offensively, the Yankees looked good in the first inning, and then that was it. Johnny Damon led off with a double and Derek Jeter singled before a walk and a flyout loaded the bases with one out. Jason Giambi lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score the first run and Melky Cabrera stroked a run-scoring single, one of two hits on the evening, to give New York an early 2-0 lead. After that, the Yankees would only get another 2 hits, and remain scoreless.

Thursday night, the Yankees will try to avoid being swept by the Tigers, when they send Ian Kennedy to the mound. oh BOY!!
